Medical transcription via Windows Mobile

By James Kendrick | Saturday, September 24, 2005 | 2:39 PM CT | 2 comments |

Tech S2 has launched CaseScribe for healthcare professionals that offers wireless dictation and transcription via Windows Mobile handhelds.  The service uses ScanSoft’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking to capture the dictation on Windows Mobile devices with wireless Internet access. The dictated information is uploaded to the application server where the transcription can be turned around in as little as an hour for small dictations.  The service costs a flat $5 per transcription up to 25 per month.  CaseScribe currently supports the iPAQ 2400 and 2700 series and the Samsung i730 phone.

Blogging Rita- final part

Power has just come back on and I must say it’s been an emotional roller coaster having come from what was projected to hit us to what we actually experienced.  We have received virtually no rain except a few sprinkles, the wind is still occasionally gusting but has quieted for the most part.  Our yard is littered with tree limbs but there is no damage I can find for which we are very thankful.

On the geek side I can’t tell you how glad I am to have two batteries for my Tablet PC, I used it sparingly to get weather updates and light blogging and had only just switched out my first battery when the power came back on.  This HP tc1100 gets phenomenal battery life when optimized for such.  At times the Verizon EVDO had connection problems but I never failed to eventually get in and when I did I experienced full EVDO speed which is fast.

With power off and no air conditioning earlier today when the winds died down to a safe level at least 10 children came out of their homes to play at the end of my street.  The sad part is I haven’t seen these kids playing outside for months.  Makes you think.

I wish to thank everyone all over the world who has expressed their concerns for our situation.  Friends can help make any situation brighter, even when confronting the giant.  I am very touched by all who have contacted me to offer support.  I feel very blessed.

All pens to fly half-mast today

By James Kendrick | Saturday, September 24, 2005 | 11:58 AM CT | 0 comments |

Rob Bushway has done what many Tablet owners fear– spilled coffee over his new Motion LE1600 Tablet PC, rendering it fully caffeinated but inoperable.  He’s going to return it to Motion for repair but will be attending the MVP Summit next week sans Tablet PC.  As a result of Rob’s accident all Tablet PC owners are urged to fly their pens at half-mast for the rest of the day.

I am still without power due to Hurricane Rita but happily inking away on my HP tc1100 and Verizon’s EVDO.

Blogging Rita- part 11

Rita has moved inland. We all went to bed last night at 11 pm and all was well. We were awakened this morning at 5:20 am when the power loss alarm went off in the house.  No TV stations are live on the portable TV. EVDO rocks!

UPDATE: We can now get a TV signal on the portable. We are on the very fringe of the storm with gusty winds but no rain at all.  We still have water which is great, just no power.

Blogging Rita- part 10

The latest update by those who track hurricanes has moved the projected path of Hurricane Rita even further to the east.  This means my house is no longer in the predicted path of the eye of the storm.  We are now expecting roughly 80 mph winds which is much better than the 120+ mph winds previously predicted.  It is beginning to look like the biggest problem we might face is a prolonged power outage.  Centerpoint Energy is already reporting localized power outages across the entire Houston area and the winds onshore are less than 30 mph.  We’re keeping our fingers crossed and fully aware that in a hurricane what is good news to us means bad news for others.

Palm press conference to unveil the Windows Mobile Treo- Verizon first to fly it

By James Kendrick | Friday, September 23, 2005 | 4:37 PM CT | 2 comments |

Palm has announced the upcoming press conference that will no doubt announce the release of the Windows Mobile Treo.  How do we know that?  The press conference will include Ed Colligan, CEO of Palm, Bill Gates of Microsoft, and Denny Strigl, CEO of Verizon Wireless.  Looks like Verizon wins the prize here.  I’d love one of these puppies.

Hi, I’m Jeff

And I’m the latest guest author for jkOnTheRun.

The concise version: I’m a 30 year old guy that loves to code and is married with an eighteen month old baby girl who already has me wrapped around her finger.

My technical background began in linux and the open source world but my recent experience is surrounded by Microsoft technologies.  I’ve got an unhealthy obsession with bleeding edge tech and a bad habit of disliking those things I covet.  I love technology but don’t want to be bothered by it, I don’t want to carry luggage with me, find me something that fits in my shirt pocket and satisfies my needs and _hopefully_ I’ll be happy.  That’s not to say I can’t wait to get an X41T, I just won’t be carrying it to dinner at the in laws.  I’m not very good with the autobiography, if you’re dying to know something, ask.

I’m sure I’m not alone in wishing James, his family, and everyone in the wake of Hurricane Rita safe harbor through the coming days.

Microsoft Student 2006 and the Tablet PC- kids working smarter

By James Kendrick | Friday, September 23, 2005 | 10:21 AM CT | 3 comments |

The Tablet PC Education Blog recently mentioned Microsoft Student 2006 which is an excellent platform to aid students in handling their studies, homework and research.  Marc Orchant+’s son has been using Student for over a year and he has only great things to say about the experience with his son’s schoolwork.  He is using it on a notebook computer but I can’t help but think that on a Tablet PC with OneNote and the Education Pack installed this would be a stellar platform for students.

Blogging Rita- part 9

I just received word that my Mom and group arrived safely at their destination near Dallas.  They ended up leaving the mandatory evacuation route due to the traffic problem and went all over back roads until they got there about 1:30 this morning.  Cell phone service is already having trouble all over Texas and she was finally able to get hold of my brother here in Houston with the news.  My sister who lives in Beaumont left yesterday for the Dallas area and I haven’t heard of her progress yet.

My household is full of nervous energy as all preparation has been completed and there is nothing left to do, leaving everyone charged up with no outlet to work off the nervousness.  Me, I’m sitting here enjoying the connectivity while it lasts and listening to the sweet bluesy classic rock sound of Led Zeppelin.  Just seems right, somehow.
