Help Mark name his Q1
Mark is the lucky guy we told you about who won a Samsung Q1 Origami from the Origami Project web site and now he needs your help. He is searching for a name for his Q1 and would like some suggestions. Here are the rules from his blog:
- I want a male or neutral name. My wife is jealous enough of the time this device gets. The last thing I need is to give it a female name and hear a bunch of "other woman" cracks.
- My kids have suggested "Bob" a hundred times. I will not name it Bob. They can’t come up with a reason and it doesn’t look like a Bob. I don’t want this thing to ever bob or float or anything like that.
- There should be some infinite shred of reason behind the name. It doesn’t have to be much.
Let’s hear those suggestions but no "Sammy" posts since Kevin has that one locked up. I propose "Pointdexter" just because it strikes me appropriate.

Vera after the gun used in the TV show Firefly.
I kind of like Ozzie or the Oz Man after Ray Ozzie who helped to launch it.
“Stinky” – as in computers without keyboards stink.
If that’s a little too negatory, you could try “Linus” since Mark may bring it everywhere like his security blanket.
How about “Q” as in the mischievous omni-powerful John Delancy character from Star Trek Next Gen?
Alexander. It is a good name.
Why not name it “Alpa” meaning “the first or the beginning”. You could call it AL for short.
Spider Jerusalem. I have a reason but it’s extraodrinarily complex and nonsenical, so instead go find a pretty birdy and look at it.
Raphael. It’s one of the artists of the Renaissance period. It’s also a name of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. It’s also my name. Name it after me and I’ll name my UX180P as Mark as soon as I receive it.
Damn, but alslayer came up with a good one! Ah, Firefly, best damned American SF show ever.
How about, That Little Rat B*st*rd? It’s probably what your wife thinks it SHOULD be called!
Marcquian
I think JK Jnr. would be good
qT (cutie).
Take the name from Creedence Clearwater Revival call it “Suzie Q”. When XP logs on, have the Suzie Q soundtrack start up ;0)
Ok, where’s my prize!
Opps..that’s a girl name…
Mycroft-for the sentient computer in the book “the moon is a harsh mistress”.
Johnny- for Johnny Mnemonic.
Marvin- for a certain paranoid android.
I recommended “Noonian.” Get it? Noonian (Sam)Sung. Well, I like it, anyway.
Rover – as in traveller.
Watson – the best sidekick.
How about
Bill
,
Mr Gates would be so proud
Either Otto (as in Berkes) or Kevin (since Sammy is taken).
>>>Mycroft-for the sentient computer in the book “the moon is a harsh mistress”.
Uhhhh… I’m sure Heinlein used that name in honor of Sherlock’s Holmes’ brother.
Mike,
You are correct, tovarish.
благодарность
Hmmm…how about Tablito?
Pixel
Cursor
Expe
AD – Aid, advanced intelligence device
Master (joking here)
Pard (short of pardner)
Buddy (at bars could say hand me Bud and get a drink to boot
How about “Chip”, as in “computer chip?”
Alan, as in Alan Turing.
I vote for Qbert like the old arcade game.
Wow! Thanks for all the great suggestions! I’ve had a few more offline suggestions.
Vader – Q1s looks Like Vader’s helmet.
Spike – No good reason just fun
Kram – Mark spelled backwards
Binky – When our kids were little, that’s what we called their pacifiers.
The Linus/Blankie crack was a big hit with my wife. A big sarcastic thanks to Dave for that one!
I’m not sure I’m man enough for this I’ve decided to go with the family vote and name it Binky.
Yes, I now have an $1,100 pacifier. God help us all!

Well, I suppose. But a funny related story: I was in Sears many years back before Pentium computers hit the market. A middle-aged couple was in the store looking at the Packard-Bells on display. The salesperson was talking about the amount of RAM, the 33.6 modem, the whatever speed CD-ROM, Windows 95, the included ink jet color printer, and all the stuff that came with it. I distinctly remember her first question. “Does it come with Solitaire?”
Congratulations lady. You just bought a 50-lb $3,000 deck of cards. Go home and enjoy.
LOL!
