The Gadgeteer gets the DualCor cPC
Judie at The Gadgeteer has posted about ordering an “Engineering Sample” of the DualCor cPC and promises to start giving her impressions of the handheld as soon as she gets it. She also offers some news– the shipping versions of the cPC will included integrated WiFi and Bluetooth, something that DualCor has not stated previously. According to Judie the information she has received from DualCor indicates that “consumer models will not be shipping for another 90–120 days”. This statement is very interesting as DualCor has stated in the past their intention is to focus on the enterprise and government markets, not consumer space. Maybe one day the cPC will actually ship!

Okay…I have totally bashed DualCor in the past after learning about the required “swapping” of comm devices in the CF slot. Now, it seems they’re listening to us on the wifi and bt thing. My final gripe is no EVDO option. So, just give me my damn PCMCIA slot, or at least the PCI express version (there’s a PCI express EVDO card available, right?) and I’ll be pulling out my wallet again. DualCor MAY get this right after all. And, given the limitations we still experience with the UMPC’s with cellular communications, they might even still be first to market (EDGE doesn’t really count, in my opinion).
Hmmm… I seem to recall the stated reason for the lack of wireless was that is was a requirement of their *initial* customers (enterprise and government clients, not commercial), which means Dave bashed them for listening to their customers.
Back on track, I welcome the news that DualCor is planning a consumer model (again, the model everyone crapped on was not intended for the consumer market). Given they are a startup company building an entirely new synthesis of devices, I will give them a bit of leniency in their release dates. After all, even Microsoft with all their money and experience with their OS can’t get Vista out on time (and without all the promised functionality). Can’t expect a startup to do much better.
