This doesn’t work because of a Typo.

Doesn’t work:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System\Shutdown
Create a DWORD value named ShowHibernationButton and set its data to 1.

Works:
ShowHibernateButton

Hey guys, when you type the DWORD value it is actually "ShowHibernateButton" and NOT ShowHibernationButton. Try that and it should work for you all.

i used the tip - when you are at the shut down prompt showing
standby / turn off / restart
type the H key from your keyboard, and your pc will hibernate

this works great for me with xp sp2 - no need for any hotfix or registry editing

First you need install the WindowsXP-KB893056 hotfix. You find it here: http://thehotfixshare.net/download/index.php?dir=&search=KB893056+&search_mode=f

Next edit your reistry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System\Shutdown]
"ShowHibernateButton"=dword:00000001

You can go http://hotfix.xable.net/download/ to search and download the patch (many languages available) AND manually amend the registry.

-OR-

Fire up your FTP client and go to ftp://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/W2J/Hotfix_HB_XP_060420.zip (log in anonymously)
Just run setup.bat it will detect your language and install the appropriate patch AND update the registry to add the hibernate button.
