Dell recalls over 4 million laptop batteries

In what is being called the largest consumer electronic recall ever, Dell today recalled 4.1 million laptop batteries that the company claims may be prone to overheating and catching fire.  Given the concern raised recently about having notebook computers on commercial flights due to a risk of fire, the timing couldn’t have been worse and the two events are probably related.  Dell has put up a web site with information that describes how to tell if your battery is affected and what to do to get a replacement.  The following notebook models are listed:

  • Latitude: D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810
  • Inspiron: 500M, 510M, 600M, 700M, 710M, 6000, 6400, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 9400, E1505, E1705
  • Precision: M20, M60, M70, M90
  • XPS: XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170, XPS M1710

Only batteries with the following models are subject to the recall:

  • I wanted to reiterate the link to the Dell web page for information about the recall as well as provide a link to our forums for those who wish to discuss this.

As it was mentioned above, on August 15, 2006 Dell announced a recall of lithium-ion batteries that were sold in many of our notebooks within the last two years. This is a voluntary recall of approximately 4.1 million batteries. Your safety is our primary concern, however we also understand that your notebook is important to you, and we’re committed to getting replacement batteries shipped out to you as quickly as we can.
