Philips demos the READUS E-Reader with rollup screen

READUSWe’ve been hearing about ebook readers that will appear with e-ink screens that roll up into a very tiny form and then extend out to provide a nice decently sized screen for reading.  They appear to be getting closer to reality as a short video has appeared of an actual prototype of the Philips upcoming READUS E-Reader.  I have to admit the device does look pretty cool and since e-ink readers take very little power to run (they only use juice when changing pages) this might be a very good reader if the eventual price is right.  Take a look at the video at either blog below to see if you agree with me that the crisp screen would make for an enjoyable reading experience.

  • I saw this prototype at CES and it was amazing: very clear to read. Looking forward to seeing a practical application. An e-book device is a natural fit, but I wonder how long before we see the first PDA-type device with a rollout screen? My guess: 2009.
