Skype + Trillian = SkyLlian
Until recently, I solely used Skype as my VoIP and IM client since it has a mobile client. While this works well for me, not everyone uses Skype’s P2P service, so I need a different IM application. I toyed with Trillian, but wasn’t quite happy; I ended up settling on GAIM and it works fine. Based on a tip from my friend Paul, I may be going BACK to Trillian due to SkyLlian.
SkyLlian is a Skype plug-in that works between Trillian and Skype: "It’s made to avoid to have two contact lists when using Trillian and Skype. Your skype contacts are shown in your Trillian contacts list and you can interact with them: call them, send messages, take a call, even call your skypeout contacts. It’s easy and become quickly natural. Moreover you can set all the parameters so that you manage as you want your contacts (double click to call or to send a message, start and shut down Skype with Trillian…)"
The main development site appears to be down at the moment, but you can download a version of SkyLlian right from the product page on the Skype Developer Zone page.

I was a Gaim user before, but switched to Miranda-IM since its also open-source and lightweight… but unlike Gaim, Miranda is made for Win32 so it behaves better. It has tons of plugins and I’ve found it to be more capable than Gaim over time. Just an FYI. http://www.miranda-im.org/
