It’s not an Origami but the S-XGen sure makes me think it should be
Information about an innovative new device has been leaking out a few drabs at a time and the latest is that the S-XGen is a Windows Mobile device with a lot of connectivity options. What is getting people’s attention though is that keyboard that unfolds from the PDA-like device. It’s that bendy, foldy nature that screams Origami to me. The S-XGen is to be produced by Seamless WiFi whose very name would imply all sorts of good WiFi capability. It is rumored to also have Bluetooth, GSM, Ethernet and IrDA. The screen is a tad small at 4.25” that engadget states is running an odd resolution, 470 x 270. The company will be displaying the S-XGen at the CES in January so we should start seeing some solid information at that time. It sure does look cool, doesn’t it?
Interesting since I know James really ripped into DualCor for no connectivity and the Vega just slips by! Whats going on here?
Don’t worry- I consider the lack of integrated connectivity of the Vega to be a big negative for me personally. The reason I haven’t ripped into the Vega is because it is only $700 so some compromises must be made. I was hard on DualCor because that’s a $2,000 device, a whole different animal. I still think an expensive device from anyone that lacks at least WiFi is crazy. I’m not fond of the USB dongle approach that Raon has taken with the Vega but I understand to include it would have driven up the price and missed their target audience. At least Raon put a dongle in the box.
We’ll give it an objective look when we get an evaluation unit to play with, something that should happen before too long.
This will be the 2nd time the unit will be exhibited at CES. A few years ago, Vercel was showing off a prototype. I think Vercel sold the rights to the unit to Seamless.
