The Asus R2H is finally appearing in the U.S. and Only UMPC already has a first-thoughts review. On the plus side: the unit came with an extended battery: 48 W/hr capacity (almost 3.5 hours of use) and pixel doubling increases the resolution up to 1024 x 768. Downside: the fingerprint ready acts a little flaky. All in all, this is a good first-hand overview of this UMPC model that so many folks have been waiting for!

  • So this UMPC gets “almost 3.5 hrs” with a 6860mAh battery (assuming you’re not using wireless features, which of course is exactly what I would want to use a UMPC for most of the time).

By comparison, the Sony TX850, with a much larger screen, gets 6+ hrs out of a 7800mAh battery. Looks like the UMPC makers need to hire some of Sony’s (or Lenovo’s) engineers to come up with a more battery-friendly design.

  • Of course using Sony and battery friendly in the same sentence could potentially have explosive ramifications these days.

  • Sony has single-handedly pioneered the self-destructive battery, thus insuring that our environment is protected since we know Li-ON batteries are hard to dispose of.

  • The extended type Asus batteries here are 4 cells according to some earlier news I read (their standard batteries are 2 cells). So the Samsung Q1 has a standard 3 cell or the larger 6 cell battery. This makes it a bit confusing to buyers. The Samsung can easily come out better on battery power in tests, simply because they use bigger batteries (making the device heavier too). But I guess the Samsung also is generally lighter than the Asus if you take out the batteries and compare. Maybe thats why Asus opted for 2 and 4 cell battery solutions?

I’d love to see some comparison reviews – and especially the Samsung Q1 Pentium M version that is also coming out these days.

Also, whats up with the non-widescreen resolutions on a 16:9 format screen? Wouldnt the picture look very stretched? How is this on the Samsung Q1?

  • I just realised that my information is wrong. The Asus standard battery is a 4 cell one at 24 Whr, while the extended is an 8 cell battery! So the Samsung Q1 seems to be much better built in this regard as people seem to get over 2 hours on the 3 cell battery. I would almost go as far as saying that battery lifetime is almost double on the Samsung compared to the Asus if you compare their battery use.

  • How much of the shorter battery life is attributable to the extra hardware in the R2H? I know that each device isn’t that battery-hungry, but when you add in the GPS, camera, fingerprinter, etc it does mean more power consumption unless they’ve found savings elsewhere.

(To be honest, I feared that the ASUS model would have a battery life issue because of the gadgetry; that’s why I didn’t wait for it and went with the Q1 instead.)

  • I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels – never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? http://www.batteryfast.co.uk
