Cingular deals a GPS service to the Nokia E62
If you’re looking for a GPS subscription service, you can add the Nokia E62 from Cingular to your list. The wireless carrier just announced support for their TeleNav GPS service on the E62, a Symbian smartphone that can be had for $99 or less. You can trial the service for free during a one-month period, after that, you’ll have to ante up to stay in the GPS game. The "big blind" is $9.95 a month for unlimited use while the "small blind" is $5.99 a month for up to 10 trips. Features include:
- Voice and onscreen turn-by-turn directions – Users may enter or call in
a destination and TeleNav GPS Navigator computes the route. During the
drive, users get up-to-the minute guidance and will automatically be
re-routed if you miss a turn. Users can also preview their routes
before they begin driving and specify preferences including highways
and streets.
- Biz Finder – Allows users to find businesses and services, including
Wi-Fi hotspots, ATMs, restaurants, hotels, gas stations and easily
navigate to them with the click of a button. Biz Finder also allows
users to quickly look up and call the phone number for a business.
- Fuel Finder – Allows users to save money by finding the lowest gas
prices within a five-mile or wider radius.
- Spot Marker – Helps users easily find their car wherever it is parked
it, such as in a large parking lot or on an unfamiliar downtown street.
- Pedestrian Mode – Allows users to use TeleNav GPS Navigator while they
are walking to help guide them on long walks or through crowded
downtown streets.
- My Favorites – Allows users to save addresses for easy access later.
Some of the advanced search features look interesting, but I fold when it comes to GPS subscriptions. If I need GPS that much, I’d prefer a dedicated, one-time fee unit, but that’s just me. How about you: does a GPS service make you "flush" with desire?
Its worth $10 a month to me to have my Wife be able to find the car again with out calling me at work to ask me where she parked it.
I would pay per trip, honestly. Or rather, I’d pay 5.99 for up to 10 trips a month, but only if I wasn’t billed if I didn’t use it during a month.
I drive a lot but I don’t usually go places I’ve never been, i.e I’m not an insurance adjuster. When I do go somewhere I’ve never been, I often go somewhere totally alien where I am likely to get lost.
I’m with you on that.. why pay a monthly subscription? I use my GPS when I get stuck in traffic and try to navigate thru back roads and when I’m going a tour, which is once in 3 months. I prefer a stand alone system. I’m thinking about getting E62, have a GPS BT receiver, i’m trying to see if there a compatible software that would go on Symbian OS.
