Samsung Q1 screen resolution on Vista: trial and error has worked

Q1_1024

Although some would call me ‘relentless’, I’d prefer ‘passionate’. Just this morning I was lamenting the lack of Vista drivers and my missing screen resolution switching on the Q1P within Vista. Well, it obviously doesn’t take much to get me going: a few comments by jkOTR readers indicating that they have the res switcher working was all it took. (Thanks rolajos and Patrick for the inspiration!)

I’ve got a string of pictures to show that it is indeed working, but BOY was it convoluted to make it so (or maybe it was just me!). In fact, it was so much trial and error that I’ll likely have to re-install Vista from scratch to get the exact steps down. Then again, if someone wants to save me a few hours and share their method, that’s fine with me!

I can say this much: I’ve typically installed the latest and greatest graphics drivers right after my Vista installs on the Q1-series. Today I did bring the drivers back about two versions by installing the software provided on the Samsung Q1 download site. Bringing them back up to the latest Intel driver appears to have done the trick, but there was quite a bit of pushing and prodding with the VGA controller software as well. So while you might not have the complete 1024 x 600 picture just yet, keep your dreams alive Vista fans. There might be light at the end of the tunnel here. Now, where are those darn HID drivers from Samsung that would complete my day?

  • Relentless? Passionate? I was thinking obsessed.

  • Slightly OT, but how do people find the 7″ umpc’s running at 1024*600 go for text quality? I thought the text would be more blurry than Kevins screenshots appear. Could you leave them in that mode all the time, or does it get hard/annoying to read?

    Ta, Matt…

  • Absolutely Great JK.

I/WE Q1 owners trying to install Vista, owe you one!

Being a lil’ cheeky.. Now just waiting for the walkthrough on installing the resolution switcher successfully. hehe

  • Matt, you can keep working at 1024*600 for as long as you want. Text and image is quite workable, I give 5 out of 7, cloae enough to native res.

When you do a power sleep, hibernate, or shut down, the Res switcher would automatically return back to 800 mode.

I wonder how I would fare if I just perform an OS upgrade, anyone?

  • Thanks dc – that sounds promising!

  • I’m glad I was able to rekindle the passion for Vista res switcher on your Q1 and maybe of others.

    I’m so happy!

    Great site by the way.

  • For those who want to know what the version of the driver is for the display it is: 6.14.10.4545

    Hope that helps.

  • Rolajos which Samsung do you have Q1 or Q1P?

  • First off, thanks to jkOTR for the site and info here and of course all the posters who have been posting their progress and notes while trying to get Vista up on a Q1! Thanks!!!!

Ok, I FINALLY got the resolution change to work in Vista Ultimate (final, reatil Upgrade version) on my Samsung Q1P!!!!

How I finally did it was….
Vista had the latest, greatest drivers loaded after the install (version from mid Jan 2007 – sorry, forgot version number).

I downgraded that to 6.14.10.4545 which I found on the ASUS site for the R2H (yeah, I know I have a Q1P)…

After I installed that and confirmed the setup question that I was downgrading versions, I then rebooted.
Vista then said I had a generic VGA controller and generic display adpater!
    Odd, but Ok, no problem.

I immediately reinstalled the Intel driver I got from the Intel site (that version is 6.14.10.4704 (file named win2k_xp1425.zip)) and BAM!
    Up and running!!

I had tried many upgrades/downgrades/sidegrades the past two weeks with no success until this.
I think when it was unable to identify the adpater as an Intel one properly is where I caught my break.

Interesting note too… If I change the resolutioin using Windows and the advanced settings, any resolution above the 800×480 would cause a large horizontal/vertical scrolling desktop.

Using the resolution switcher from the Samsung Display manager forces it to fit the screen perfectly.
That is no biggie since the important thing was to get the button working and now it does!

Thanks for the tips and tricks everyone!!!
Knowing it was possible kept me trying!

Now if I can get ALL 4 buttons to map to whatever I want (currently stuck at only being able to map 1) and a Vista version of DialKeys, I can ditch XP Tablet edition altogether!

    Later!

  • The process you described (very well, I might add!) is pretty much what ended up working for me as well. One note: I believe the Intel driver you got from the Asus R2H site is the same one that is on the Samsung Q1 site. ;)

The button mapping is still an issue. You get the default button mapping and that’s it. No way to mod or add new mappings for now. Thanks!

  • KCT – thanks! I wasn’t sure what version(s) I had and didn’t have and from where they came from any more. Too many tested to get this working.
I saw that roljos used 4545 and wanted to make sure I tested that one specifically and the ASUS one was the first link in a Google search.

    Anyway……..

I can get the button mapping to accept ONE key, the U1 key in a new group.

I can add a new group and immediately add ‘F11′ (my preference for one and only one key) and get that to save and work.

I forget what the version I am using that allows it, but I know there are two versions I tried and one allowed nothing and the other allowed just one button to be set in a new group. The configuration/settings for the two I tried were visibly and functionally different from each other. I can post that version number up if anyone wants to know which one I am using.

I hope Samsung addresses this soon (and DialKeys too)!!!

    Thanks again.

  • I found out something interesting with the latest driver from Intel (6.14.10.4704 ).
By default the setting “Hide modes that this monitor cannot display” under the Monitor Tab is enabled.
If you uncheck this you can access the higher resolutions and the resolution button works. It did not work before because with the setting enabled, the graphics adapter would max out at 800 X 480. You can get to that setting by…
    Start>Control Panel Home> ( Appearance and Personlization) Adjust Screen Resolution>Advanced Settings>Monitor.

Now all I need to get working is the BlueTooth.
