Is there a secret in getting the Atheros Super G adapter to recognize and connect to 108Mbps networks?

I could do this fine before I upgraded to vista. But now that I've upgraded it always connects at 54Mbps, and I can't figure out how to increase it.

On XP, there was an Atheros application that doesn't exist on Vista. I think the application would put the card in Super G mode.

I considered Vista for my 1610, but like mitty, the eye candy isn't worth the hassle. Vista doesn't help me with personal productivity at all. I have been doing everything that I can to LOWER the memory footprint of the OS and loaded apps. I have to say, getting rid of the fingerprint reader software has just made all of the difference in the world. I was astounded that loading XP (not tablet) with SP1, the memory footprint was a mere 79.5MB; this is down from almost 300MB with the stock Fuji loadout. Where did all of the crapware come from?

I have upgraded to Ultimate and have similar experience to you. Specifically i am very dissapointed with the audio performance. The internal mic is a poor shadow of the awesome device that it is under XP.
However, i have found, with a little bit of configuration you can improve it slightly. Hopefully this will allow you to record and use skype.
After selecting the recording tab in the sound setup dialogue, >internal mic >properties > advanced tab> dvd sound quality. This boosted the mic level a little on my machine so i could use skype. I also switched on the sound enhancements although i'm not sure that they helped.
If you find a better work round or permanent fix for this problem please let us know. I'll post if i find something new.
Thx, Brian

I can't get over being amazed that M$ supposedly spend $7B on this. A "cool" interface. "as fast as XP ... most of the time" 15-20% less battery life. A 45 sec. wait for a supposedly faster login method. Common apps that don't work. I guess its nice at least that the TIP works better.

But ... why would anyone want to go through this grief unless, like you, it's a job requirement?

>>>The handwriting recognition engine in Vista apparently likes “unique” as it is so much more accurate for me that I am using it to input longer pieces of text than I would under XP. The TIP experience just feels more natural to me than the old version and I think Microsoft has hit a home run with this.

Glad to see my own brief toying with it at Digital Life was not a fluke or my imagination.

Wow! all of the issues you are having (microphone, battery life, fingerprint reader) are all reasons I was looking to upgrade from my P1510D to the P1610 Vista. I am waiting for Fujitsu to release a native P1610 Vista so hopefully they will have those issues worked out. Plrase keep us updated.

You mention in your observations that the fingerprint scroll option in IE is available to you. I lost that ability when I moved from XP to Vista. I do have the ability to use the Omnipass to log into windows desktop at startup (so I know the fingerprint reader works). I attempted to reinstall the pointing driver and the fingerprint driver a second time with no success in activating the scroll capabilites. (I did do the firmware upgrade prior to installing all the new drivers).

Called tech support and they were stumped and at that point realized that their's did not work as well. I am awaiting support level 2 to call me back today.

It surprised me to hear that yours fingerprint scroll worked.

dr z- I am running Vista Ultimate and have full Aero Glass, it just doesn't appear that way in the screenshots. I get all the video features you mentioned, taskbar preview, flip 3D, etc. I don't find a performance hit due to aero glass or I'd turn it off.

Windows Movie Maker and DVD Maker both run fine on the Fuji.

The WiFi article you posted is quite informative, but as the author states this power savings setting that is on by default in Vista is new to Vista and should only give better battery life over that of XP, but not have an adverse affect under Vista. I have switched my settings to Maximum Power Savings under the WiFi Adapter setting in the Power Plan I'm using so I'll see what happens. I suspect it will make it difficult to connect to older access points, like the article states.

Since you have a TIP in your screenshots, are you running Vista Business or Vista Ultimate? Your screenshots seem to lack Aero Glass effects; do you miss the hyped up Vista features such as window glass, Flip 3D, taskbar thumbnails, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Movie Maker? Or do you think these features would adversly affect performance on your machine?

There is a good article from Microsoft here
http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2006/12/04/how-windows-vista-rtm-build-addresses-wireless-connectivity-issues.aspx
regarding the new wireless power usage. Basically, older wireless routers may not be completly compatibile with the new power profiles for packet burst, causing Vista to set the wireless power setting to a more compatible mode.
