More Q1 Ultra news: hybrid drives and lower-cost models
If this morning’s Samsung Q1 Ultra news roundup didn’t whet your Origami whistle, check out these bits from Infoworld as there’s some additional info on the Ultra and sales numbers on the original Q1 series. First up: Infoworld mentions a May release for the Q1 Ultra, which confirms what others have heard. Next on the docket: Samsung indicates they’ve sold 100,000 units of the original device; I’ve seen numbers batted around before, but I’d consider this one legit. Lastly, there’s two nice tidbits to wrap up: Samsung plans for hybrid hard drives in the Q1 (not sure when) and is also considering a second, lower cost version called the "Samsung Q1 Nearly-Ultra". OK, I made up the name, but the second version is for real

The lower cost one is already out. It’s called the Nokia N800.

But really, I expect any lower-cost Samsung Q to be about as useless as that Nokia.
There’s just no getting around the current price, dammit.

Hey, maybe we will see a 2nd gen UMPC for under 3000 USD!
OK, just to sort this out: I LOVE the friggin thing. It’s ten times as sexy and sooo much more capable than current 1st gen devices. I mean… DMB, GPS, HSDPA (possible 4G, HSUPA) in an Ultra-Mobile… that all sounds like microsoft’s 2010 vision!

and not like a 2007 UMPC. But I think throwing it all together doesn’t fulfill the ideal price point that the Origami Project was aimed at.
Even the various UX versions have less amazing specs and already cost way over 2000 bucks, so I’m not confident the Ultra will be in an affordable price range any time soon (before 2008). A compromise like “Almost-Ultra” doesn’t sound bad to me if it will get me a more than decent UMPC for less than $1800.

Personally, I was hoping it would be called the Q2. Not just to avoid confusion, but to increase the odds that the Q1P Vista price will fall fall fall… below $1000.
Any word on whether this will bring a significant price change in the Q1Ps?
The numbers thrown about from Cebit news at other sites were between $1300~2000, depending on processor speeds, RAM and HDD versions used.

Shogmaster, the way I read those numbers was those are the prices of the current model based on different processors, RAM and HDD size. I’ve seen no mention of different Q1 Ultra configurations aside from possibly having a lower cost second model. I could be wrong, but wanted to point out my interpretation.

This is the convention for referring to the new Q1. Do it as * Q1U * — this will make it easy to Google.

Well, I played with the new Q1 Ultra today. Very nice screen, and certainly a major improvement from the old Q1. I looked at some websites, including JKOnTheRun (want a pic? ), and it’s great for surfing. The keyboard really didn’t impress me, though. It’s okay for entering a quick URL into a browser, but that’s about it. I couldn’t even convince myself to post this from the Q1 Ultra.
a low cost option would be nice – I don’t mind thumboards myself (using one right now) – I jjust hope that its not a via processor, or if it is, then maybe a 1.2 or a 1.5 ghz like the OQO02 at least. Wishful thinking? I suppose, but I remain hopeful.
Its not a Via processor. Its a new centrino processor 800 mhz dual core aimed at these sort of devices. There are a number of intel powered devices launching in April in Bejing Developers Forum using this architecture, Samsung being one of them

Details are 5 models. All have 1 gig ram. All use new battery type — lithium prismatic, which promises 4.5 hours run time with standard battery.
Q1U-EL — base model with 1 gb ram, 40 gb hdd, no hsdpa, and slower processor than other 4 models. but with windows vista home premium. retail price of $799 (USD), and release date of june 2007.
Q1U-XP — 1 gb ram, 60 gb hdd, no hsdpa, and windows xp tablet, but same processor as top 4 models (including this one). retail price of $1149 (USD), and release date of june 2007.
Q1U-V — middle model with 1 gb ram, 60 gb hdd, no hsdpa, and windows vista home premium. again same processor as top 4 models (including this one). retail price of $1199 (USD), and release date of late may 2007.
Q1U-CMV — second to top model with 1 gb ram, 80 gb hdd, with hsdpa, and windows vista home premium. same processor as top 4 models (including this one). retail price of $1499 (USD), and release date of august 2007.
Q1U-SSD — top model with 1 gb ram, 32 ssd, with hsdpa, and windows vista home premium. same processor as top 4 models (including this one). retail price of $1999 (USD), and release date of august 2007.
models to be carried by all major vendors — best buy, circuit city, fry’s, new egg, etc.
