Use a regular phone to make free phone calls with magicJack

By James Kendrick | Monday, March 19, 2007 | 9:29 AM CT | 83 comments |

MagicJack USBWhat comes in a USB stick and lets you plug a regular phone into a jack to make free high-quality phone calls?  Why magicJack, of course.  The magicJack USB device has a regular phone jack on the back into which you plug your phone and off you go.  The service rolls out in next month so you’ll have to wait until then to buy your magicJack.  You get full features like caller ID, call forwarding and waiting.  It’s not clear how international calls might be charged so you might still need Skype for that, and the magicJack service can’t handle 911 emergency calls, either.

  • My magic jack works like a charm. I have AT&T voip and I cannot tell the difference EXCEPT in the price. I love mine!

  • I ordered my magic jack and I loved it so much that I ordered one for each of my children. We all love our magic jacks. The quality of the calls is as good or better than any other VOIP we have used. We plan on giving them to everyone we know as stocking stuffers this holiday season. I cannot think of a better gift than a wonderful money saver. I would say to anyone thinking about this product to put one on your shopping list. How could you go wrong? The install process is a snap and it works with your regular analog phone with any high speed connection. LOVE MY MAGIC JACK!!

  • We registered our Magic Jack and had to choose an area code from another city. We were then given a new phone number. We tried calling our cell phone from our home phone but had to include our local area code to get the call through. Then we tried calling our newly assigned home number from our cell phone and the call doesn’t go through. What’s wrong?

  • Dear sir,
    Two quick questions please…..
    1. Can only one phone in your house be
plugged into the magicjack and work? We have
one in our bedroom and one in the kitchen and one upstairs.
    2. I noticed both positive and negative
comments on this website. What can you tell
    me about the negative comments?

    PLEASE respond! Thanks! PAM BURNS

    • Only one phone can be plugged in the MagicJack device. I purchased one my self for home phone use and it works great. Since there is a limitation of a one-phone plug-in, my wife and I bought a 5 station cordless phone setup, where there is one base station and 4 satellite stations. The base station is the only device in this group that hooks to the phone line. We now have 5 handsets that share the line and they all work great, as long as our Internet is up and running fine. but this will be a requirement no matter what VoIP product you use

  • My magicJack was working fine with my portable phone and suddenly today I can’t call using the phone keypad. If I use the on screen keypad the portable phone works fine. I substituted a standard corded handphone and it calls out just fine with it’s keypad. The portable phone works just fine on the land line.

  • Hi,
I am a fulltime RVer and it has occured to me that this device could be a great cost saver for RVers. We host in different parks during the year. If this device works as well as advertised I may be interested in being a distributor. Is that possible?

I plan on ordering one for the 30 day evaluation.

  • From what I just read I wouldn”t buy this grabbage even if it is so called free,I see what your scam is. You make no customer service numbers available, you post no address to your company which I find very strange because everyone does not have a credit card, your marketing are missing out on millions of dollars in direct payments alone. This is a 30 day free trial, why do you need my credit card number now? I would like to send the postage in if that’s what you need it for but that’s not it you are gonna hit those cards up front before the 30 is up and give them hell getting there money back. I can tell by the web questions you got more negative than positive remarks. No thanks if you were on the level you would post the answers so the people can see you taking care of business. You are going down the drain Magic Jack. If you were honest you would tell the truth: Dear Customers: please note your magic Jack will only do the following things:
    Will only work with windows.
Will only work in the first computer you plug into
Will only work with one phone and some brands won’t.
Will not work with certain internet servers.
We do not have a customer service department as of today.

In other words drop the scam, return my money and you will be hearing from my lawyer, People we got stuck with 56 of those things and only 8 work.

  • I want to know how to hook this up so that I don’t have to have all my relatives re enter my Magic Jack number. Or at least give us a reasonable estimate on when we will be able to use our existing phone numbers instead of a magicjack number. Until then this thing will sit on a shelf somewhere. I don’t want to keep switching my phone line back and forth so that friends and relative can call.

  • Add me to your e-mail list and send me updates on your service. I spend $30.00 a month for absolutely basic service, upon which I have a 3 minutes per penny card (3000 minutes for $10.00, only usable from NE)
That’s about $35.00 per month (*69 & local calls) and $10.00 per year making the total of $430.00 per year.
Update me as you work out the kinks. Particularly keeping my original phone numbers.

  • Mr. Kendric,

I would like to thank you for this post. This is the funniest string of blog responses I’ve ever read. Everyone thinks this website is the MagicJack website. Even, in some cases, after they’ve somehow managed to purchase the unit from MagicJack’s actual website. A whole year’s worth of unbelievably repetitive stupidity is recorded above. Fantastic!

    http://www.magicjack.com/1/customercare.asp

Maybe that link’ll help out some of the poor bastards. I mean, do you people blindly navigate the web handing out your credit card numbers willy-nilly? Wow.

To just about every ranting, whiney question above, the answer is basicly yes, it’s possible, but you do not sound like you have enough mental capacity to manipulate operating systems, wire home phones, or navigate the webbernet. Either find a friend who can, or stick with your current phone service.

The MagicJack isn’t a product designed to be complicated. Mine works perfectly but I did have to install an update. Then I had to unplug it from the USB port, wait a moment, and plug it back in again. If the previous sentences confuse you then you shouldn’t use a computer.

    Toophless — 3:18 AM on April 1, 2008 Reply

  • Oh. Sorry. I made it sound like you might have to be able to wire home phone systems to use the MagicJack. You do not.

  • Wow, a lot of comments here. I’ll suggest what someone suggested above (though in a nicer way) to check out MJ’s own website. Their FAQ answers a lot of questions at http://www.magicjack.com/1/faq.aspx
To answer some comments above, I’ve been a MJ customer since last Oct., but I’ll fill in what I know.
MJ’s site says that it now supports Intel Macs (whatever that means).
The MJ is not restricted to one computer or one phone. I’ve used mine on multiple computers, bouncing back and forth between XP and Vista. I have read that a small percentage of phones have problems, but can’t recall the source. A $5 corded phone from Sprawl-Mart works fine for me.
You do NOT need a land-line. You need an internet connection. I have FiOS and use MJ. Granted, if you have DSL, you will still need the land-line to get your internet.
If you do not use DSL, but rather get your internet via cable, satellite, or fiber-optic straight to the house, then you can disconnect your house from the phone co. lines by unhooking the wires in the box on the outside of your house. Once the phone lines in your house are no longer powered, you can run a cord from the MJ to any empty phone jack, and all the rest of your phone jacks will be able to call through your MJ. (Note that there may be power issues with this of which I’m not an expert. It works for me, as I have two phones plugged in at different jacks, and they both work great.)
I’ve sent faxes over MJ. A friend bought one to receive satellite updates for his Media Center computer which he uses for his television. Data transfers are clean.
If you have slow internet, such as 768k DSL, using your internet while talking on the MJ might degrade your quality. Working at 5mb on FiOS, I see no loss of quality.
They have phone numbers in many states, but not all. I live in Indiana, but my number is in Minnesota. I just use a Grand Central number which routes calls to my Minnesota number, so local people can call me for free. (People with caller ID often wonder why I’m calling from MN, but it’s not been a bother yet.)
MJ promises to allow me to port my existing telephone number one time in the future for a small fee.
MJ can call any phone — land, cell, other MJ, Skype, whatever. International calls are now possible with very competitive prices. You buy blocks of $5 or $10 credit ahead of time. A friend from S. Korea asked what it would cost him to call home, and it was 2¢/min. If you take a MJ oversees, you can still call to the US for free, and people in the US can call you oversees for free. Again, you have to have an internet connection.
I’m still a Vonage customer (waiting to port my number), but I’ve used MJ as my primary phone for about 2 weeks when my Vonage box went out on me. People never knew the difference. Once I can port my number, I’m going to save myself $320-$340 a year. Is this thing for real? Is it worth it? Yes.

  • Hello for those of you interested in buying the magicjack you can buy at our website http://www.gophono.homestead.com are pricing is higher heres the reason why and what you will be purchasing. We at Gophono have researched this product from day one. We have become resellers of this product for this reason. It will change the telecommunications era as we know it!! this type of technology was actually first introduced in the early 90’s but was shot down by the big time lobbyist and special interest groups representing the big phone comapanies. Can you imagine if this technology was approved then? Companies like Skype,Vonage, even Comcast Digital Voice, would’nt have existed, the phone companies would have drastically had to reduce prices. What Dan Brislow(inventor) did was simply introduce old technology to a new era by creating a partnership with Y-max and creating an internet based telephony system. Its really a lot deeper than that but thats in non-tech language. Most of the problems I have been reading are due to some computer issues that I have read and experienced from other sites. This product will only work as good as your ISP,your network speed,USB power,anit-spyware on your computer, configuration, settings, etc. All has an effect on whether or not this device will work effectively as a phone service. Yes I do agree that Magicjack could have done a better job creating a technical support arena where real answers could be given to people who are spending there money, and yes the live chat is not the greatest, getting refunds is another blog entirely. I’m an advocate for this product because in due time as this product becomes more well known and is marketed and supported better it will shake some feathers in this industry..As I stated before I’m a reseller for the Magicjack I’ve done my research watched it grow over the months, I’ve seen a change on the horizon a change that will eventually save some of us a lot of money its about time that someone has the courage to step up to these billion dollar corperations and say that “you’ve been ripping us off long enough” Comcast has did it lower that AT&T at 39.99 presently AT&T is about 55.00 plus dependin on the features that you pay seperately for it can go up to 80.00, and thats phone alone! Vonage has done it for 24.99 after fees an taxes it about 32.00 an some change, the next logical step. A once a year service at 19.99 NO TAXES.SURCHARGES,FRANCHISE FEES,INTERSTATE CONNECT FEES,LINE MAINTENENCE. FEES ETC. hhhmmmm now how do we get around all those charges? because with any regular phone companies every one has there hand in the cookie jar!!!!The piont I’m making is this… !1.The Telephone as we know it was’nt a perfect invention to start it had huge problems, thier was wide spread disbelief that it would actually work!!..2.Many seen the auto-mobile as a complete waste of time, they were deemed unreliable, obnoxious, loud,an scared the crap out of a lot of people..Oh I could go on but you get the point. It has its kinks people will be frustrated but for 19.99 a YEAR !!!! I have one an it works great,,ooops sorry I have 4 personal and 52 left for sale as of 15th May and they are selling fast almost too fast I have all the info you could ever want when you buy from me.All the neat tricks this devise will do!everything from turning the blue light off, to making it run thru the entire home,LIVE TELESUPPORT #s everything is covered when you buy from me. And again I apologize for the magicjack companies lack of tech support sometimes you just gotta get up quit crying and see what you can do about your situation….J Reid CEO/Gophono Co.

  • Does anyone have any tricks up their sleeves for satellite (hughes.net) broadband use? When I call people, I can hear them perfectly. But they can’t hear me. All they hear is choppy words and static in the background. I’ve updated the original program (customer service helped me with this.) I love the concept but live in a rural area and don’t have access to cable or DSL. Trying to get rid of my land line for good. Anyone else trying to use satellite broadband with mj? Thanks !

  • I own a MagicJack and I love the product and use it all the time. It does everything it claims it will do. I would like to sell MagicJacks as a business. Can i become a MagicJack reseller? Can I sell MagicJack on my website and become an offical MagicJack affiliate. i LIKE IT SO MUCH I WANT TO BE A DISTRIBUTOR. IS THIS POSSIBLE?

  • I was uasing my magic jack just fine up until 4 weeks ago when it just stopped working one day. I can make calls but I can not receive them and when I talk to people they tell me it says the line is blocked or it is just a busy signal.
They try to leave me messages and they can not do that either. Many times I try to call my voice mail and it will not let me enter I have talked with the customer service people for hours and even have paid others to sit here and do the same ror hours. finally I hired a tech to come here and he worked with a tech or who they said was a tech at customer service and I think my tech got it. This phone worked fine until the announcement of Magic Jack joining with At& T. My tech asked about this merger and then he found out the merger took place much faster then AT& T was ready and AT&T has not reconfigured their routers correctly yet. We find out this may take months. wow I need this phone but I am very frustrated with this mess.

  • I bought my Magicjack at Best Buy for about $40 (including the $19.99 service fee for one year). I couldn’t be happier….well, except I would like to port my number!

My service works as good as Vonage and better than the digital phone service I had through my cable provider.
