Intel’s vision of a digital lifestyle mobile PC
Om Malik points us to a very nice video produced by Intel demonstrating their vision of a true ultra-mobile PC. The video is very well done and shows the potential of the mobile PC to become a true digital lifestyle gadget that integrates into every facet of the user’s life. This would be so cool and I do believe we’re closer to this than you might believe. Check it out and see what you think.
If you mean close by ten years, then yes we are close. But I really don’t see this happening anytime soon.

Apparently apartments in the future are all concrete….cuts down the termite problems.
Its funny, Microsoft had something similar about 15 years ago about the “future” and created a drama show. Then recently did a look back as to how close they were. Some things they were pretty close but others were way off.
But this stuff still always is fun to watch.
That technology is pretty much all here now it is just not fully integrated and the infrastructure for it is not fully integrated.
A color OLED data watch that can synch is here now, I have one. Push mail to a watch is here now, MS SPOT watches. Cell phone watches are here now. Both fully integrated cell phone features and wirelessly connectable to a cellphone.
Voice recognition systems for home control, PCs, and portable units are here now.
Data transfer wirelessly from and to a UMPC is here now.
Cell phone and push mail built into UMPC is here now and pretty much so is video phone capabilites.
Wireless high speed cellular data networks are here now.
The key is integrating all these features and combining all these into light, small, portable units that have acceptable battery life (non contact device charging is also here now).
Also the wireless data networks need to be expanded in coverage and increased in performance.
So technically I think we are there in under 5 years but logisticlly and economically it may take 10 years to realize it fully.

I’m agreeing with every one else. All of this is possible, yes, all the technology is here right now. But there is no way we are can expect to see this at a price the average Joe can afford not until it is seen as a necessity (like a land line phone) instead of a privledge to be that connected all the time.
If you notice all the people using the technology for the business settings seemed to be fairly succesful to be able to afford all of that stuff (that looked to be what, at least a 30 inch monitor the first guy was using and that sure looked like a Mercedes, BMW, Jaquar type of car the second guy was driving).
Can’t imagine how much Verizon/T-Mobile/Cingular will want per month for that kind of “data” service just so you can chat with a friend to meet at a club. (I’m surprised as well the Apple lawyers haven’t already sent out their cease and desist letters for that very iPod phonnish interface).
While these kinds of videos are great to look at and enjoyable, there are far too many issues between what we’ve just seen and the average Joe Blow being able to afford to live this version of the Ultra Mobile lifestyle.

There are 8 million+ people that have 1 million dollars or more in the united states. Dont forget the people who have 100,000 to 1 million, So i think those people will start the trend of the Ultra Mobile lifestyle.
