Toshiba outs a 16GB flash chip with integrated controller

Toshiba_nandI was hoping we’d see this new 16GB flash chip with integrated controller as part of a Solid State Disk drive announcement, but Toshiba indicates that their new product is geared towards mobile phones and digital audio players. At just 14.0 x 18.0 x 1.5mm the 16 gigger is comprised of eight stacked 2 GB chips and is capable of 6 MBps write speed and 15 MBps read speeds. Toshiba plans availability of 1- and 8 GB versions in September and July of this year, respectively; the 16 GB capacity won’t be seen until December. Since the Zune was morphed from Toshiba’s Gigabeat, I have to wonder if this has anything to do with a flash-based Zune player. Hmm…..
