Happy birthday to us- Geekapalooza #5- win a Sony U71!

By James Kendrick | Thursday, May 10, 2007 | 12:44 PM CT | 110 comments |

CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED. THANKS FOR ENTERING!

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us, happy 3rd birthday jkOnTheRunnnnnnn, happy birthday to us.

Kevin_cartoon_2Jk_icon_100pixCan you believe it?  Three years ago today jkOnTheRun was born, with us never anticipating how far it would come in such a short time.  What began as a simple place to talk about mobile technology has grown into a site that hundreds of thousands of people come to visit each month.  I get seriously humbled when I think about that.  You folks are the best readers on the web bar none.  It’s only fitting that our next contest in the Geekapalooza series should be starting on this our Blogiversary so we’re throwing out all the stops!

This special contest has you playing for not one prize, not two but a whole mobile kit.  First up is the smooth leather Vaja Messenger Bag that you saw in this jkOnTheRun review.  This is one of the nicest gear bags you’ll ever see, much less touch.  MSRP $380.

Vaja_bag003

Next up is something that we know you’re going to love putting in that Vaja bag and hitting the road.  This prize is a device I consider to be the original ultra-mobile PC and one I used as my only computer for over a year.  Yes, the winner of this contest is going to walk away with my beloved Sony U71!  This device has been lovingly used by yours truly and is in perfect condition and even though it’s almost 3 years old the specs still rival those of some UMPCs today:

  • Intel Pentium M 1.1 GHz
  • 512 MB memory
  • 30 GB hard drive
  • Docking cradle (USB ports, Firewire ports, VGA out)
  • Headphones with remote control
  • CF slot
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth (with included Billionton CF card)
  • Touch screen (5") 800 x 600
  • Note that the Sony USB folding keyboard is not included

Heck, rather than list everything it’s got just go through all of the articles I’ve written about (often using) the Sony U and see for yourself.  MSRP- Priceless  :)

Sony_u71_handheld

This prize package is already one of the best you’ll see anywhere but we can’t stop there, no siree.  We can’t give out a Sony U71 without throwing in some cool accessories to fit in that Vaja bag.  First up is the Sony carrying case with integrated stand which makes using the U with a keyboard very nice.  MSRP- who knows?

Sony_u71_stand_case

One case for the Sony U is not enough so we’re throwing in the PDAir leather case for stylin’ with the Sony.  MSRP- originally a lot.

Pdairvaiou50case1_s

Last but not least you may have seen my articles about the Sony U as part of one of the smallest desktop PCs when used with a Bluetooth keyboard so we just have to throw in that keyboard.  This is the original Stowaway Bluetooth keyboard that complements the Sony U perfectly.  There’s something special about this keyboard though, it’s been autographed by Kevin and I making it the official jkOnTheRun Bluetooth keyboard and hopefully adding the personal touch to this prize package.  MSRP- can’t be bought at any price (mouse and phone not included).

Sony_desktop_1

Last but not least the lucky winner is going to snag an external Sony slimline DVD burner (DDR3) that connects to the Sony U dock.  The burner will boot the U and draws all needed power from the dock connection and originally retailed for $400.  Sorry I forgot to take a photo of the drive, it’s the smallest external drive I’ve ever seen though.

So there you have the total prize package and I think you’ll have to agree it’s a doozy!  The winner is going to be one lucky person and since it’s such a good package you’re going to really have to work for this.  Read on after the jump to see what you have to do for this prize.

Looking back through all of the posts on jkOnTheRun for this contest has driven home to us how you can often track our personal lives by what you read here.  We decided to make the scavenger hunt for Geekapalooza #5 a little more personal than the others so here’s what you need to answer to be eligible for this super prize package.  The contest will run until midnight 19 May CDT (Saturday night) and we’ll randomly select the winner from all correct entries submitted as a comment to this post at that point.  Ok, here’s what you need to answer:

  1. Kevin and James first worked together on what defunct web site?
  2. JK had what emergency surgery 6 years ago?
  3. What famous heart surgeon performed that surgery?
  4. For how long after the surgery was JK unable to speak?
  5. What hastened JK’s release from the hospital?
  6. Kevin first announced his engagement where on the web?
  7. What is the name of JK’s dog that aided in his recovery from the surgery?
  8. Name JK’s grandson (first and middle names).
  9. Name JK’s dog that had to be put to sleep.
  10. How many fires have been experienced in the JK household?

Finally, in addition to providing the correct answers to the above questions, for #11 tell us in a few words how long you’ve been following jkOnTheRun and what you like best about the site.

That’s it, not too big a task for all the loot up for grabs.  Good luck to everyone and thanks for making this all worthwhile for Kevin and I.

I really love is the fact that you always seem to be the first to cover in detail whatever new device just popped up. This is clearly evident from how often the blog entries on this site are linked to from other blogs.

I added the site to my daily bookmarks then. Last year when I made the decision to by my first tablet, my frequency of visits went WAY up. ;) I love the tablet coverage you guys give. You tend to cover aspects of hardware that is skipped over on other sites, but that I want to know about. You guys rock!

I actually found the site looking for more information and of all the sites out there doing reviews yours seemed to be the best for covering the bases. I often don’t agree with your opinions on many things, but can’t seem to walk away from the point of view that is expressed here as it gives me a fresh perspective.

I started frequenting tablet PC sites after I bought my first Acer Tablet, my Travelmate C110 -RIP – I cracked the LCD:(
I have since moved on to the Gateway CX2610 and am still loving the tablet PC for coursework, teaching, conference presentations and everything else that I can use it for!

    11. I’ve been reading jkOnTheRun for almost 2 years. It was immediately made an addition to my RSS reader, which is now Google Reader. I especially love the video reviews. The tag line “…using mobile devices since they weighed 30 lbs.” made me laugh out loud, as I’ve been doing the same thing. :)

11 – Living vicariously though your blog for about one year has been one of the ways I’ve stayed sane through medical school. I’m about to graduate next week, and I’ll be about $150K in debt… I have always liked your personal touches to the website; you guys give a real life perspective on so many things, and it’s nice to see that the internet can be a more personable place. On a side note, James: your experience with surgery reminds me that there’s a purpose to my long years of schooling, and that is of course to the patient. Perhaps with your continued advice, technology can help me do that a little more efficiently and more fun! Thanks, guys!

  • I’m not going to enter this one, because I already have a U, but thought I’d comment that I owe that to James, and his pioneering installation of XP Tablet on his U. Before that, so well documented right here on jkOnTheRun, I wouldn’t have considered getting one.

So if I were answering question 11 I’d say that I’ve been here since pretty much the beginning, but that I first “met” James in the Tosh e800 forum on Brighthand in late 2003. When the e800 first made its appearance that forum was extremely active but also often highly contentious, and I quickly learned to value James’s posts. So I followed him on over to Pocket PC Tools, and was pleased to later see him also make his appearance at Tablet PC Buzz, which had been my first Tablet PC “home” on the internet, since the late summer of 2002. Then came his articles here about XP Tablet on the U in 2004, and I found a new Tablet PC home!

    11. I’ve been reading about a year. I can’t even remember what led me to the site but I can tell you that I have read it every day since. I most like the feeling that I am getting an honest users view on the articles. With many tech/gadget blogs I get the feeling that the review may know gadgets, but doesnt know the ins and outs of how they apply to real life. From my short time reading the blog I know James and kevin lead a mobile lifestyle. I KNOW and trust them to review items or comment from that perspective, and thats what makes this site valuable for me.

11: A long time! I can’t remember how i found the site but it was when i was a student and my obsession with mobile gadgets began. Since then I’ve kept coming back for the reviews and sneak peeks at various devices. Unfortuantely, moving house meant i had to disolve the ‘geek fund’ and sell my gadgets. Now I come to see whats available in the hope that I can get started again.
The main plus points for me is how you make the site personal and the indepth video reviews which let us get an idea of a gadget much better than photos.

I first posted to the site on October 29 2005 to the mobiletechroundup site but had been reading the jkOTR site and listening before then and even phoned in on the techaddiction line to talk about my experiences with the Sony Ericcson P910i. What I like best is the way that you demonstrate the use of the equipment in your daily lives and how much time and energy you commit to making the site the great example it is today, (even commiting your own finances when you find something you really like). I find the personal approach used by jkOTR one of the main things that keeps me visiting the site several times daily and this is supplemented by the podcasts and occasional video too. I feel I have grown in my use of IT alongside the site, which has undergone it’s own transition and influenced my buying decisions in many ways.

  • A Birthday Story !

(1)Kevin and James first worked together a little over 4 years ago at the now ended PocketPC Tools. That led to to a number of joint efforts including the now defunct TechADDICTION Podcast and another Podcast, MobileTechRoundup.

Then, on Sept 6th, 2001. JK (at the young age of 45) had (2) emergency coronary bypass surgery 6 years ago to correct a condition called “The WidowMaker”. That operation was performed by the world renowned heart surgeon (3)Dr. Gerald M. Lawrie, (who has also had served on Dr Michael DeBakey’s team of surgeons) at the Methodist Hospital in Houston. Except for a few whispers, JK was unable to speak for (4) 5 weeks after the surgery. Due to the tragic events of 9/11, JK was released earlier then planned as the Hospitals in the Houston Medical Center were (5) put on alert due to possible terrorist activities. We are glad that this has turned out well and that JK has been able to move on with his life.

Keeping with today’s technology, Kevin announced his engagement to Barb on (6)TWITTER on March 21st, 2007. Barb has been very supportive in Kevin’s blogging and podcasting efforts and even once their combined efforts were on the 11 o’clock TV news in Philly.

As an avid dog lover, JK’s dog (7)Oreo, played a big role in his recovery after the heart surgery. Oreo, a little mutt, was acquired when a co-workers dog had a litter.

A blessed event occurred June 5, 2006 when JK’s grandson (8)Grady Leland was born to JK’s daughter Misty and her husband Kurt. Grady Leland weighed in at 9lbs 3oz. That’s a big baby boy!

On January 16th, 2006 JK shared the terribly sad news of his dog (9)Bradlee having to be put down after his family had noticed that he was having health issues. A visit to the Vet then showed that they had to make this decision. It seems like Bradlee was certainly a part of the Kendrick family and will always be missed.

In closing, we would like to remind everyone to make sure they check the batteries in their smoke detectors, because you never know when you could have a fire in your home, or like JK, have (10)TWO fires at your home. The infamous fire in the oven on May 30, 2004 and then on July 4th 2005 they had a little “Three Alarm Fire” on the grill when Sheri K’s sister was in town from New York. So please, be careful with your cooking fires inside and out. Fire is not a fun experience I can assure you through my own experience with a house fire. And buy an extinguisher BEFORE you have a fire. Right James?

    11. I hope you have enjoyed this glimpse into some of the ups and downs that the jkOnTheRun family have experienced over the years, as I have enjoyed researching and bringing these details to you. In the last year I have adopted jk OnTheRun as my first and foremost website/ blog to visit every morning, afternoon and usually when the evening is done. I find the site informative and on top of the latest trends and technology. Combine that with their personal insight and commentary and you have the perfect one-stop-shop for today’s mobile technology enthusiast.

Happy Birthday Guys. It is truly been a roller coaster ride! See ya back here for my next 4 Year recap!

    11) Ever since my friend referred me to this site, I’ve been checking it daily. I can update myself with some technology info since I find out lot from here. It also gives me some idea on the aspects of what I really need and want when I need to make a decision. BTW, I got a Sony U50 not long ago after reading your past review of the U70. Since the U70 is more expensive, so I got the lower model instead. However, college expenses are way too high for me, I wind up selling it. It was ultraportable and convenience for me to carry back and forth. If it were not for the money need, I believe I would still keep it because I really LOVE it. That’s my sharing, thanks. Also, can’t left this out–Happy Mother’s Day!!!

    11. I’m not sure exactly when I started reading JKOTR but it was before Kevin came on board. Your site is a “must read” for me several times a day. I bought a Samsung Q1 after reading and watching all the great video reviews and posts. I also ended up getting the stowaway bluetooth keyboard and other stuff to after reading. So, it’s time for you guys to give something back! Just kidding! :)

    11. I first encountered JKontherun 2-3 years back when I was googling for a new HP PDA review. Since then I’ve dropped my PDA interest and moved onto ultra mobile PCs. I’m always on the go and constantly forgetting things so pocket pcs are the only thing that keep me organised and on top of things. Way ahead of the launch of UMPCs and Bill Gates’s interest in these devices I’d thought there was a massive untapped market for pocket pcs to replace the old simple OS devices like PDAs or Blackberries. The thing I noticed was JKontherun also thought the same way, so this has been the place to follow a market that is developing over the past few years. JKontherun has shaped the market I suspect, bringing new devices into touch with potential users and maybe even influencing the design of new devices. 2007 has been the best year yet for mobile pc devices, 2008 I predict will be even better and be the first year we canb truely say these devices have become mainstream.

    The old way was:
    Phone
    PDA
    Laptop
    Desktop

    The new way will be:
    Smartphone
    Dockable UMPC
    Desktop

–> I have been a quiet visitor for many years – I remember reading the posts about your surgery as JK posted them. What I like best is the way you have combined the technology news with your take on its (im)practical daily use.

  • 1. Kevin and James first worked together on what defunct web site?
    This would be Pocketpctools.com.

    2. JK had what emergency surgery 6 years ago?
He had a triple coronary bypass.. sounds.. not very fun.

    3. What famous heart surgeon performed that surgery?
Dr Gérald Lawrie, must have been good, eh?

    4. For how long after the surgery was JK unable to speak?
5 weeks, but I’m sure it only seemed like a moment to his family. Kidding.

    5. What hastened JK’s release from the hospital?
Due to “Possible terrorist activities” as a result of Sept 11th.

    6. Kevin first announced his engagement where on the web?
Twitter, maybe a first? I’ll have to check that, but I would think so.

    7. What is the name of JK’s dog that aided in his recovery from the surgery?
Oreo, and I still think that’s an odd name for a dog.
    8. Name JK’s grandson (first and middle names).
First name: Grady Middle name: Leland
    9. Name JK’s dog that had to be put to sleep.
    Bradlee
    10. How many fires have been experienced in the JK household?
Too many… Well, Two a grill fire and an oven fire.
    11. Well, I’ve been following the site often since the review of the tabletkiosk umpc (I believe jk was one of the first to get a hands on review). I had been interested in tablets/umpc devices, so when I found this site I thought it was one to keep up with. When Kevin came along, the site really picked up with even more posts per day, very nice. I suppose one of the nicest features of teh site is the really personal atmosphere. It’s much easier to get a sense of your reviews ;and trust your observations without actually having to see teh device in person.
