Lenovo ThinkPad x61 screen options- what happened to SXGA+?
Given the big sale at Lenovo I decided to spec out one of the new ThinkPad x61 Tablet PCs to see how the sale would impact the final price. I intended to max out the configuration with all the bells and whistles but the very first option threw me for a loop. I want the same SXGA+ (1440×1050) resolution that is available on the older model, the x60, but it seems it’s not offered on the x61. Here are the screen choices available when configuring the older x60:
As you can see there are two configuration choices with the higher resolution screen. Now look at the configuration choices for the x61:
There is no option for the higher resolution screen and the one option for SXGA (1280×768) is not a resolution that Lenovo offers. It apparently refers to the XGA screen with SuperView that GottaBeMobile mentions in the comments to Warner’s first impressions of the x61. This is not only confusing but downright misleading for anyone trying to order an x61 with a high resolution screen. What’s up with that? There is no way I would buy the x61 with only 1024×768 resolution.

Lenovo has chalked this up to it being a “typo” on the site. Multi-view with SXGA+ is Superview and their should be “+” there. It is confusing and a bit silly.

I wouldn’t place a $3,000 order based on a comment on a blog. They should prioritize fixing that on the web site, and then get all of those people in that thread their laptops.
Come on, give the retailer a break; it’s a tiny forgivable typo in my opinion, which could easily be cleared up with a phone call to their sales representatives. Their blog is responsibly corporately-run and speaks for their company; Is their comment not to be trusted just because it’s not just a individually-run tech diary blog? I think its misleading to tell people a product option doesn’t exist without actually confirming it with the company; though, that’s the right of privately run bloggers, not professional journalists.
For what it is worth, when I purchased my X60 Core 2 a month ago it was not possible to get a resolution larger than 1024 x 768 if you opted for the touch screen. Is that no longer the case? Also, is XP not an option on the X61? Surprising given how many applications are still Vista-challenged.

Why would I give the “retailer” a break if they are apparently not capable to fix such a tiny typo in their online store? I mean, come on… what software are they running their store on or what kind of organization do they run that they can post on their blog that there is a typo but they can’t fix it at the source??
Oh, and that blog thread about incorrect order dates? Those who bought the first set of X60t last year can tell you long frustrating stories about those dates. Looks like they still haven’t fixed their supply chain system/online store integration properly.
I just had it confirmed with Lenovo that you can order the x61 with SXGA+ resolution. I guess you must place the order by phone since the web site won’t give that option.
The web site is not 100% accurate in many cases. Or even 90%. I originally ordered an x60, but have now changed my order to an x61s. In either case, XGA is the highest available.
No one seems to know what the UltraConnect 2×2 vs 2×3 does, and yes, I did talk to a sales rep about it. My rep made it 2×3 just because it seemed better. And be careful of the warranty choices. It had said 1 year, but it really is a 3 year depot warranty.

Always order by specifying the Type-Model (e.g., 7762-95U) and then add the upgrades.
They’ve temporarily (hopefully) pulled the SXGA+ screen due to a manufacturing/design problem.
they should have withdrawn it for the x60 as well imo, just not as many x60 owners have complained, and maybe its a little less common as it doesn’t get as hot?

I hope to god they sort this out really quickly, and in a very hard wearing and totally heat resistant manner suitable for the thinkpad excellent reputation ASAP, as I desperately want one of these machines.
