Did people really say that? Probably did.

  • Hi folks:

Not having the urge to get the device but helpless with the urge to get to try one and play around with it a bit, I accompanied one of my friends (Luis) to get his iPhone (James says I cheated the system by doing this). Yes, I stood in line (albeit for 2 hours) and everything (yeap, I am good friend !!!).

We got inside the store at about 7 PM and while Luis got his deal made, I played for about 10 min with one of the display iPhones. Later, we went to Luis’ house, where he threw an “iPhone barbecue” for his closest friends (including yours truly of course) and I got to configure it online using iTunes (very user friendly experience), selected his plan (yes, this guy trusts me!!) and all of his settings.

My takeaway from perhaps 1 hour plus of iPhoning is that it is definitely a killer device, data transfer is fast (tried both WiFI and EDGE), phone capabilities are good (tried BT headset).

Am I gonna get one? Well, answering that question was the whole putting “myself through the motions”. I am still on the fence about the following issues: (i) battery is not removable (I could probably live with that); (ii) SIM card is inside the device and not removable (terrible, terrible); (iii) I have to confess I am not a fan about the keyboard. although it may just take some time to get used to it (I am spoiled with the one on my iPaq); (iv) no tethering as wireless modem (really bad); (v) hard drive capacity (they could have done 20 GB at least).

So the answer is probably NO. I say “probably” because if this baby gets unlocked, and someone figures out how to swap the SIM card, I may just jump on it. And I think the tethering may also be something one of you geniuses out there will figure out…

  • Comments on standing in line on iPhone Day from here in the land where the Microsofties Run WIld (Bellevue/Redmond).

It was a terribly sad day for the Microsofties. They stood in line, got their shiny shiny and huddled outside the Apple Store in Bellevue Square using their PC notebooks to attempt to activate their iPhones. But since AT&T is sharing the monthly take with Apple: no corporate rate plans qualify, including the subsidized Microsoftie plans. The cries of anguish were horrible enough to bring a tear to your eyes.

Most of the folks standing in line weren’t buying iPhones for themselves, most of them were buying as gifts but mostly to sell on eBay. Some of the really greedy eBay types brought their young children as Apple counted them under the “two per person” rule. Several of the “kept women” were overhead whining “You didn’t tell me I’d have to wait this long…” or “Can’t I go to Nordie’s for my new purse now and come back?”

And of course you had the flow of folks out of Nordstrom’s complaining about the crowd in front of the Apple store: they’re lined up like this for a phone, RIDICULOUS! (Said loudly enough for everyone in line to hear) Fortunately no one pulled a 300 on one of these people (security was heavy).

The really clever eBay folks didn’t get in line. They were like sharks, never stopping, always in motion cruising the line near the store offering to pay cash on top of the price for anyone willing to buy an extra unit and handing out their phone number. After 6pm they expanded their coverage to the unofficial activation area outside the store looking for anyone with an extra unit and offering them cash on the spot for it.

Inside the store near the registers they broke the line up based on cash or card. I zoomed ahead because I was using my Mastercard with loss protection coverage. To protect themselves the eBay’ers were paying cash, it was simply amazing! I walked past 8 people in the cash line next to me as I went to the head of the empty card line…

I came away from the event feeling like I needed a hot shower with strong soap.

Activation took 5 minutes to complete from ripping open the box and the unit has lived up to all of my hopes and dreams for an Apple cell phone.

My first impression: Apple has a very good Windows Mobile Killer in the iPhone. Ballmer can talk iPhone killer all he wants, but Microsoft is the incumbent here. I predict more cries of anguish from down the street in the coming months as Apple shows Microsoft that yes indeed: they didn’t release all the features on zero day. :-)
