Coffee break- first Sony UX in the wild sighted
I know it’s not a new device, in fact the guy in the coffee shop where I’m currently hanging my hat bought it six months ago but it is the first time I have seen a Sony UX in use in the trenches ever. He’s getting good battery life because when I asked him how long the battery lasts he honestly didn’t know. He carries the UX on his belt and uses it in the field daily and when he pops in a coffee shop he plugs it into the wall and tops off the battery. Doing this he says means he never runs out during the day. He was entering a lot of data into a spreadsheet using the integrated keyboard and tiny screen when I ran into him. He was also using an iGo power adapter and that thing was really small, even smaller than the Sony adapter. Too bad I don’t have a camera with me or I would have taken a photo of it.
All those mobile devices and not one of them has a camera???

I’m glad you’ve seen the UX in all it portable glory! I love mine (traded up from an OQO).

Love the blog! I read it a few times a day (on my UX)… Although, you’ll notice that I have an external battery pack hooked up to mine (gives me close to 18 hours!), I also use a bluetooth keyboard as often as I can.

any by him plugging it in everytime to top off the battery means he’s blowing through probably 4 or 5 cycles per day (no matter how low it gets). so in a matter of months his battery is going to have extremely reduced capacity & he’ll be out hunting for a new 1. if you’ve ever bought a Sony battery before, you know what a pricey adventure that can be.
You mention he was using the inbuilt keyboard. How does he find that for usability? It’s kind of strange you didn’t mention whether he actually likes his UX or a list of pros and cons he has with it.

I’m just going to second Dion’s sentiments; I’m also a happy owner of a UX. (Nice setup by the way, Dion.)
How is it that you didn’t have a camera? Maybe you should have asked him to use a mirror; the UX has two.
He said he loved everything about the UX. IT was interesting to hear him talk about how the UX enables him to be productive everywhere because he always has it with him.
Since the Blackberry 8830 doesn’t have a camera I didn’t have one with me because I forgot to throw the Dash in my bag.

James! You’ve forgotten about the N95 already? *sigh* I have been loving taking pictures with it since its optics are so good (compared to the vast majority of other phones). And being able to upload those pics directly from the phone is fun, too.
If you’re going to throw a second phone in your bag for a camera, you gotta take the N95.
Strange. In the last week i’ve had a feeling that i should be testing out one of these and have been in contact with Sony UX. Maybe it feels cheaper now that devices like the OQO and Flipstart are here.
There’s also some rumors of new models on MicroPCTalk which makes sense. A Core 2 Duo 1.2Ghz would really make a portable desktop replacement.
As a portable office I think they are great apart from that screen. its like 260 pixels per inch. Would make my eyes bleed! I’d like to see a 5.6″ version of it.

i use my vgn u750 wth 60gig. this is cool and easy, the problem i dnt see that many people using umpc’s regardless of brand. the othr is that people are always asking a lot of questions about the computer
Jezlyn, I have switched the SIM and 2 GB microSD into the N95 which will be accompanying me everywhere from now on. That camera is just the bomb!
Hey steve i was worried about the screen size but itis crystal clear, i havethe sony ux280p and it has now replaced my desktop and my samsung q1, unlocked the sim and it wors great on orange etwork here in the UK. The inbuilt keyboard is fine for say: MSN and general web usage, but i need a bluetooth portable keyboard for word etc, The zoom utility is great aswell. The only downer is the fact it only outputs 1360×768 on my 22″Asus Monitor (native is 1680×1050) so i too shall be picking up the new rumoured Sony UX if it has a better graphics card.

That’s weird. Even the oldest UX can do 1600×1200. And a 280p can do over 2k due to the 950 graphics it has. I would investigate this further.

My UX280p says Inte 945 Graphics express in device manager, i am running windows vistahome premium with aero if it makes a difference as appose to xp.Maybe i got the wrong driver installed, ill definately check it out…
He carries it on his BELT? It weighs at least a pound and a half!
Ya, the Sony UX is a very minute device which is very perfectly manufactured to suit any place of carry…
