Engadget appeals to Palm- they respond

Palm_logoThe folks at engadget outlined a course of action for Palm to get the slumbering PDA maker back into the competitive fast lane.  It is a good plan and apparently Palm is watching.  Ed Colligan has promised on the Palm blog that some exciting stuff is coming up.  To quote Ed:

Let’s rememberthat it is very early in the evolution of the smartphone and there isenormous opportunity for us to innovate. We have only just begun tofight!

That statement sums up Palm’s problem in a single sentence.  You see, Mr. Colligan, the rest of the industry began to fight at least seven years ago.  You’d better train awfully hard for this fight.

  • I completely agree.

I was an avid follower of Palms (mainly handsprings) and had every treo (including the 180g) up until the 650, at which point the OS became stale and surfing with blazer was just frustrating. So I migrated to windows mobile.

Since that time, I haven’t seen anything that has made me want to go back.

The Palm lifedrive and tungsten’s were cool for their time but I dont understand why they couldn’t have had a bit of cross department collaboration and pushed that innovation into the treo (handspring) side of the business and then carried it on!

    I miss springboard!

  • Just like Apple in the late 90s, Palm should focus one strategy and one strategy alone: hire Steve Job. Right on!

  • Gosh, I thought *I* was one of the very few who found the very vague and scripted statement was another one of Ed’s “yes, you’re right and we’re working on it, so shut up for a few more months” reply. I was starting to wonder when many bloggers posted positive reactions to the response and I thought I must be the only one who is somewhat skeptical. Thanks for not being one of the crowd.

  • JK wasn’t the only dissenting voice. But I think mine has been the frankest one:
