Does Samsung agree with James? Three XP-based Q1Us say: maybe

Q1ultra_press4This is interesting considering it’s fresh on the heels of James’ post regarding Vista on mobile devices. Surely you remember the hotly debated opinion piece titled "Vista will never run well on mobile devices". It was one of the top read posts from last week and it elicited a great set of discussion and commentary. I’m not suggesting that Samsung makes business decisions on what we write (although sometimes I wish they would), but yesterday morning they announced three new Q1 Ultra configurations: all of which run Windows XP.

There’s a unit with a 32 GB SSD drive, the Q1U-SSDXP that will retail for $1,649. The Q1U-XP and Q1U-ELXP will come in at $1149 and $999 respectively. The ELXP runs on the 600 MHz A110 CPU paired with a 40 GB drive, while the additional $150 of the Q1U-XP raises the CPU to 800 MHz and offers 50% more storage with a 60 GB drive. I’ve got some commentary and opinion of my own experiences on the Q1 as I’ve run both XP and Vista for quite some time on the mobile device. Stay tuned…

  • Why is the ELXP MORE then the EL Vista, and have a slower processor? Does that make any sense?

  • Whoa there, Kevin. You have a *Q1*. Your experience there is going to be damned different than having used a *Q1U*. I think Chippy tried that bit, emulating a Q1U on a Q1 and got shredded by readers!

That said, has anyone seen *any* Q1U in a store for actual sale?! I haven’t seen it at the CUSA and Best Buy I’ve stopped in.

  • One of the XP models have been on sale for a while now. Costco has one.
Nobody has pointed out a SKU is missing from the list. Where’s the Q1U-CMXP? The HSDPA version with XP.
    It’s still listed on PCConnection.

  • Not that I don’t think James’ opinions are great, but Samsung made that decision weeks ago. I just got a Q1U and am working to optimize it, but I am not at a point where I would go back to XP.

  • @Mike
I saw one at Frys’ in Dallas, but no where else yet inside a store.

  • MPJ: I’m sure Samsung made the decision a while ago as well.

Mike: so I have a Q1 (Q1P actually). It’s a mobile device so I feel I can share my opinions on how Vista runs on a mobile device, no?

  • Yes, Kevin, but not compared to the much slower CPU of the Q1U, that’s the point I was making.

BTW, on some message board that linked to me, some woman got po’ed at her Q1U and re-installed Vista and optimized the hell out of it and turned out very happy. I don’t have the link, sorry.

  • Gotta disagree and rather strongly. Poor performance for Vista on Q1U is only “out of the box”. 2GB RAM upgrade and simple tweaks—turn off sidebar and some eye candy and aero—and the Q1U is more than fast enough for most practical use. I never wait for anything most of the time and occasionally wait under 5 seconds. I would not have it with XP given the handwriting advantages of Vista and I do a lot of handwriting.

  • I gotcha Mike. I looked on James’ opinion piece to NOT be specific to the A1xx CPU, but to mobile devices in general but I see your point. I think it’s a safe assumption that Vista will generally run better on a 1.0 GHz Pentium M over an 800 MHz A110.

  • Rodfather, who visits often, just blogged about his recent return to XP from Vista, which he’s tried 3 or 4 times on his Q1. He sums up beautifully both what he’s gaines by moving back to XP along with what he’s lost. A very objective piece and thought-provoking.

MPJ: LOL… I think that was me Mike. I thought you were exaggerating in your fondle, but before I wiped it off the time to load the Control Panel was out of control. Now it is pretty good.
