How to: calibrate the battery of the Samsung Q1 series UMPC

Samsung_q1_extended_battery_1

Our earlier post on battery wear prompted a few commenters asking how to calibrate their device battery. For Mac notebook users, we’ve got you covered right here. Since the earlier post revolved around the Samsung Q1-series of UMPCs, here are the steps I follow to calibrate or refresh my battery.

  1. Fully charge the battery first and then unplug the AC adapter.
  2. From a cold boot, turn on the device and press the Menu hardware key on your device. It’s on the right side and is the lower of the two buttons.
  3. You should now be in the BIOS. Use the analog stick to move right to the Boot menu of the BIOS tabs.
  4. Use the analog stick to move down through the options until "Smart Battery Calibration" is highlighted. Press the Enter hardware button. It’s on the right side and is the higher of the two buttons.
  5. You should be prompted to run the Battery Calibration. Press the Enter hardware button and let the calibration program run.
  6. If you need to stop the calibration at any time and don’t have a keyboard attached, press center of the DPad; the little circle surrounded by the "U1" through "U4" keys.

It’s that simple and will take as long as needed to fully drain and calibrate the battery. Afterwards, just charge it back up again. Have any calibration steps for other specific devices? Drop ‘em in the comments!

Is there any way to have something like this done with some software? I’m having some terrible issues with my battery including it quickly discharging for the first 15% of power that it consumes, and sometimes it things it has a 0% charge, then will jump back up to 100% for reason I cannot explain.

I have a Samsung R50 laptop. I did the “Smart Battery Calibration” because the autonomy was less than a half of the original lifetime.
Now the battery is damaged and the computer powers off in 5 minutes.

BE CAREFUL USING THE “STUPID BATTERY CALIBRATION”!!!!!!!!!!!!!
