And I thought I was the only one to name my UMPC

Artie_thaiSome people just don’t get it: you have to provide a name for your PC in Windows in order to join a network. Yes, I’ve taken some ribbing from these short-sighted folks that apparently don’t understand how Windows works, but I’ve just been redeemed by Jenneth over at GearDiary. She introduces us to "Artie", her Asus R2HV and goes one step further than me: she takes Artie out for Thai food!

Seriously, Jenneth "gets" the whole UMPC experience and I can tell by this quote: "I’m not saying that Artie has replaced my laptop, but he is coming along with me to places that I would never bring the MacBook." UMPCs are companion devices and in most cases, won’t replace a laptop so kudos to Jenneth for understanding the concept; I can’t wait to see more of her thoughts on the portable platform! So what names have you given your PC or UMPC?

  • Kevin- you didn’t really think you were the only one, right? I currently have Sydney (P1610), Nikita (Sony UX280), Q1U (trying to pick a name), Alexis (TC1100), and LittleOne (Sony T150). I never bothered to name the q1.

  • My Q1P is named Susan. The name wasn’t so much for Windows networking, but I needed a name for the VPN mesh.

  • All my PCs are called Murphy (1,2,3 etc), while my hp 2210 PDA is Alfred, and my twin hx1950’s are Castor and Pollux (I found a demo model really cheap, so I thought I’d get it as a spare). Geek on my friends, geek on.

  • My Miata is a black and tan and its name is BAT.
therefore my iPaq is BatPaq; my iMac is BatMac.
My nickname has been Wiley Kyote for years and to go along with W Kyote and my little fast Miata, my laptop is named ZoomZoom. (The Miata license plate is ZM TX ZM – Zoom Zoom around Texas.
    Thanks

  • My OQO model 02 is named Tonkatsu (japanese style chicken fried pork) it’s about the same size as a pork cutlet too. Too bad every time I think of that name I get hungry.

  • My barebones based laptop’s called “robobestia” (spanish for robobeast from Voltron) and my Q1 is called the Gameboy. I know it’s not original but my friends baptized it the first time they saw it.

I don’t think I’ve ever named any other device I didn’t assemble myself.

  • Ever since my high school lan party days I have had to interact with others on networks so I had to come up with a naming scheme – don’t ask me why, but I chose cloud types (yup, dork.). Machines I have or have had in the past both at home or at work (no, I don’t have this many boxes ;) ) :

cumulus, stratus, nimbus (server), cirrus (laptop), arcus (mac), fractus (pda), scud, fog, and supercell (not strictly a cloud, but I was running out of ideas at the time)

And yes, there is a twisted logic to what gets named what. If you look them up you may guess why. When I eventually get a UMPC it will probably be the latest “scud”. (individual, slow moving, low flying… ;) )

  • I’ve personally never named my UMPC. My Q1 is ‘Q1′. When I had Vista on it, it was ‘Q1Vista’.
    Ya boring.
Question though.. When strangers come up to you and ask ‘What’s that?’ Do you say ‘Oh, this is Sally.’

For that reason alone, I think I’ll call my next device Rick James. Just so when the time comes when someone asks what that device is, I’ll say ‘Rick James bitch!’.
