Move files between PCs with the power of a Tornado

TornadousbfiletransferSo you’ve got two Windows PCs but no network and you need to transfer files between the two. That’s where the Tornado comes in handy! Much like the USB cable I received with my original Samsung Q1 UMPC, the Tornado is a cable with USB ports on both ends. The cables are actually flat and wind up into a hurricane-shaped housing. Deep in the "eye" of the unit is a flash module with software that creates a temporary network between two PCs, allowing you to transfer files between the two.

The beauty of the 4.8-ounce Tornado is that it supports USB 2.0 transfers which should whip those files around in a fast frenzy. At $59.95, it might be a pricey solution to some, but for folks that find themselves needing to move files between PCs very often in a non-network situation, it’s well worth the price. I’ve used the similar solution that came with my UMPC many more times than the original, intended use and carry it in my gadget bag all the time.

  • I can’t deny the elegance of this solution. But wouldn’t a crossover cable work just as well?

Does the tornado work on non windows machines?

  • you dont even need ethernet crossover cables on any relatively modern machine, all you need is a regular ethernet cable.

these aren’t completely network independent, you still have to have network permissions in place or it wont work.

  • In most situations, a USB flash drive seems to suffice for me. Not sure that I’d pay $60 for yet another item to carry around “just in case”. And at home it really wouldn’t be all that useful.

Also, I’ve never had the need to do it, but I’d imagine setting up an adhoc/peer-to-peer wireless connection isn’t exactly difficult either if you really have to transfer files larger than what your USB drive can hold?

  • Bought it. Needs adm permission to talk to a locked down machine.

Does anyone know if the Q1 cable will work with any two machines and does it need adm permission to do its work?
