High school football miles from home
A very cool thing happened last week that I haven’t mentioned. You’ve heard me mention in years past our local high school football team, the Cy-Fair Bobcats. I mentioned them a lot last year as my stepson played for them and of course running back phenomenon Sam McGuffie became a YouTube star last year based on plays like these. McGuffie and the Bobcats caught the attention of ESPN and last Thursday night ESPN2 aired the game between the Cy-Fair Bobcats and Cy Falls Golden Eagles live! Unfortunately the game aired live when I was on the plane to Vegas but good buddy and mobile maven Kevin Tofel stepped in and DVRed the game for me. He gave me access to his SlingBox and I am sitting in a Starbucks in the Mandalay Bay watching the game over EV-DO which absolutely rocks! Here’s what I am seeing:
The video quality is great and even though our Bobcats lost Mr. McGuffie had 175 yards rushing which was fun to watch. He wasn’t even the top rusher in this game if you can believe that. I am very impressed with the SlingBox video quality and feel another purchase coming on since I’m winning in Vegas.
Special thanks to Kevin for doing this recording for me and especially for holding down the fort on jkOnTheRun by himself in my absence. Kevin is a super friend and a great mobile guy in his own right! I’ll be back soon dude!

Of course, you also just admitted to piracy. According to all the rules and EULA’s etc that were agreed to, when Kevin gave you access to his Slingbox, the two of committed piracy… and then you went and blogged as much. I hope no one from the MPAA or RIAA reads your site.
Does the Sling EULA really say you can’t let someone else use your box? Do they have family plans, or is it one box per member of the household? I doubt James and Kevin would get in any serious trouble anyway; End-User License agreements are all well and bad, but they’re certainly not law.
Despite what some people think they wish, placeshift and timeshifting are both legal — at least in the United States. Universal lost that court case, remember?
James,
Between you and Zatz, I’m having a difficult time resisting a slingbox. I have a way to watch recorded shows on my phone using Beyond TV, but not live tv. I’m wanting to follow my Missouri Tigers next week while I’m on the road and well it’s going to be the first game I won’t see this season….
Good luck in Vegas!
Brent
Up here in Ann Arbor we are really looking forward to having McGuffie around next season. He’s already become almost like a folk hero around here with his highlight reel on YouTube. Thursday was my first chance to see him play. He’s clearly hurting right now, but still looked good. Needs to work on his blocking big time though. Michigan expects its RB’s to be able to protect the QB and he won’t see the field until he improves in that area.
