Bad kitty! A Leopard ate my iLife apps, but they’re coughed back up

TigerbundledsoftwareYes, I’m a bit of a masochist. Sometimes I do things with my computers just for the experience. When Leopard arrived, I did the quick hit activity: I upgraded right over Tiger. It worked well but that left me without the other side of the coin: going through an Erase and Install of Leopard for that factory fresh smell. Staying up until 1 am on Saturday morning changed that: the install went without a hitch. And then today I went to edit a picture for my Vye S37 ink post. Uh… where did iPhoto go?

Of course iPhoto was gone as was GarageBand, iMovieHD and many more apps that I used from time to time on Tiger. I panicked and sent a tweet of my woes only to have the answer from Dwight Silverman in less than two minutes flat. The applications I was looking for were available on Disk 2 of the Mac OS X Tiger disks that came with my MacBook Pro!Thank goodness for the instantaneous nature of Twitter and thank you to Dwight. He was 100% correct. If you “lost” the apps that came with your Tiger-based Mac, just insert Disk 1 of Tiger to your computer. Then look for the “Install Bundled Software Only” icon. Your only other option isn’t one you want, unless you want to go back one kitty to Tiger again: “Install Mac OS X and Install Bundled Software”. If you go with the default installation bundle, you’ll be adding 9.5 GB of applications to your hard drive. Hit the Customize button and you can choose which apps you do or don’t want installed. Thanks for the assist, Dwight! Shame on me for thinking the apps came with Tiger when they actually came with the purchase of my MacBook Pro…

  • I noticed the same problem when I did a clean install a few versions ago. Kevin – when you re-installed programs like iPhoto, do you just get the version that came with your computer, or does it get updated at all?

  • Mickey, you’ll get the version that originally came with your computer since that’s what is on the disk. I immediately hit Software Update and three of the apps had updates waiting to bring them current.

  • Uhh, wait, isn’t iLife half the reason to have Mac OS in the first place?

  • In my case, (Power Mac G5 purchased almost 4 years ago), iPhoto is still present after installing Leopard; but double clicking on it makes it flash then immediately exit. Same with iDVD. :-(

  • Thank you so much for showing us how to install the Tiger bundled software into Leopard.

  • Hi, after reinstall leopard (to take off that bluescreen everyone hates), I had to add another 9.5 gb of memory (total of 20 with first install). Reinstall went great with ARCHIVE & INSTALL. I only have this doubt , is there a way to restore or erase the first 9.5 gb of memory that the first install took from the HD ?

    Thank you

  • I had the same problem when I installed leopard so I tried installing the bundled software from disk one and I received a message that it could not be installed and to make sure I met system requirements… what is the deal?

  • Hey, I’m having the same problem as Michael Traum. After installing Leopard, I realized my iLife apps were gone, so I followed your advice and put in me Tiger install discs that came with my powerbook and tried installing bundled software and it said I needed to meet system requirements and that it couldn’t do it. Any help?

    THANKS!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this. I had the same problem and I didn’t see the garageband icon on the front of the Install Bundled Software only menu, so I was worried it wasn’t there. I’ll be sure to look for the Custom install, as I don’t want it to downgrade Mail and iChat and those things that did come with Leopard. Thanks again.

  • I was also trying to get my IDVD to work. It keeps saying that it cannot be used on the present version. I never lost any of the other apps. of I Life with my new installation of Leopard. The rest work . But I reinstalled the Tiger bundle and my IDVD STILL will not work. H E L P!!!!!!!!!!!
