gMOVE migrates Outlook data to Google

Gmove

I’m nearly done evaluating my potential move from hosted Exchange to Google and it looks like the last piece of my puzzle just fell into place. Since I’ve used Exchange for nearly three years, I have a fair amount of current and archived mail on the server with no easy way to move it onto Google. Or so I thought. LimitNone offers a Windows application called gMOVE which migrates your Outlook data to Google; the app in $19 for a limited time and a free trial will migrate 100 mail messages as a test.I’ll be doing the test simply because $19 for what’s essentially a one-time use application needs to work 100% for my buck. However, I’m already keenly interested in it because it doesn’t just move your mail: it will tag your mail with Gmail labels using Outlook folder names. This is key for me since I’ve had an organizational scheme going for three years and I’d hate to completely lose it. Even better: gMOVE migrates calendar items, contacts and tasks as well. I’m set on the Contacts, having grabbed my free copy of Entourage just yesterday and then exporting my contacts to a text file (something you can do natively with Outlook as well, of course). Once I’ve got this test complete, I’ll write up a final thoughts on Exchange vs. Gmail since Mike and others are curious to see what I’ve decided.(via Google Operating System)

I’ve spent the $50 and hooked up my domain’s MX record to them. For $50 you also get 99.9% uptime e.g. you are apparently no longer scumming it out with the freebie accounts. I also found their approach to advertising quite amusing: you can turn it on/off. Evidently they feel I might still want their advertising. :-)

So far no regrets and their servers/bandwidth smoke anyone else I’ve ever worked with.

  • You should be able to move Outlook messages to GMail using IMAP. Just connect Outlook to Exchange and GMail at the same time. It might be a bit more manual, however you would get to pick how the labels are applied.

  • Great tip if the email client can connect to Exchange! I was doing this in Mac Mail which is why I looked for a 3rd party option, but I may hit up Outlook to save some time & money. Good call Rick, thanks!

Outlook can’t handle uploading more than a few hundred emails at a time through IMAP, but the easy and free solution is to use Windows Live Mail that comes with Vista. It can easily import all your Exchange email through Outlook, then you just need to drag and drop folders to your IMAP account. It handled folders with 3000+ emails in them no problem (I just did the Exchange/Gmail migration myself), and because you are moving them into folders on the Gmail IMAP account, they automatically get the associated label.

  • I just dragged and dropped my IMAP folders in thunderbird… no cost… no fuss

    Hi:

Im just thinking about moving to Shared Exchange with 123Together. Im wondering now about the Google offering. Suggestions?

Last week, Microsoft (microsoft.com) announced that it had begun the beta program for its Online Services offering, a version of Exchange and SharePoint hosted by Microsoft and delivered as a service. There is a great overview written at http://www.thewhir.com//features/031108_Online_Services_Okay_with_Partners.cfm

  • Another way to increase the value of MS Outlook is to access trough it to another platform like Google.

We just launched KiGoo, a free tool that allows Google users to fully manage (create, read, update and delete) their Calendar and Contacts from MS Outlook.

Also KiGoo manage the Free Busy information of your Gmail contacts for appointments if they shared their FB status.

Currently we support Windows XP and office 2007.
