You mentioned the Windows Experience Index is 4.7 in the same part of the article where you talk about running both OS's on separate monitors. I assume the 4.7 index is in boot camp and not through Fusion as the graphics support in Fusion will not get above a 1.0. I went through this process this week and the performance with a Vista Bootcamp partition running in Fusion is much faster than through Parallels. If I go into my Documents folder, I don't have a /Virtual Machines folder. I wanted to pin the VM directly to the dock so I don't have to launch from the application and then select it. Can someone advise why I don't see it?

Alrighty, I'm sold... My Ubuntu VM is being installed as we speak and I took the plunge. The tipping point - my computer is NOT too HOT to hold while running Fusion unlike Parallels. Thanks for motivating me to check it out (since coming out of beta), James.

FYI VMWare currently is running a 20% off special. Use code MACSANTA07 when checking out.

Call of Duty 4 doesn't run under VMWare but I am happy to report it runs great under Boot Camp. The MacBook Pro is an awesome Windows game machine. :)

Nice article. I just did this very thing with Tiger because I figured we are at the final update 10.4.11. We don't have Time Machine, but I've been using Carbon Copy Cloner for years. Back up your hard drive to another and do a clean install of Tiger. You will get the import files and settings option from another Mac, partition or hard drive upon bootup, choose to do so and you're good to go. I also switched from Parallels to Fusion which is another reason for doing this re-install. I've been using the Boot Camp under Parallels and now Fusion since day one and its really been a great feature. The only issue I ran into was that after 30 days I had to call to get another Windows Access code from MS on the side I didn't activate Windows on. For some reason Windows thinks the other side is a different computer because of the different amounts of ram its using under each setup, Boot Camp vs Fusion (Parallels).
Besides this its really a great setup. I would like to see Apple eventually get Boot Camp to fire up like they did with the Classic mode of OS 9 alongside OS X. Then we could seamlessly jump back and forth between OS X and Windows apps without the use of 3-party apps. We could also use this feature as a Space. I don't know if it's possible but then again I never would have imagined Classic mode in the early days of OS X.
Cheers

I don't have a Virtual Machines folder anywhere. That would be the perfect way to launch it. the Spaces idea is superb, a great way to run VM in a full screen but get it out of the way. So far I've been using Unity and it's pretty useful.

James, I've been running Parallels in Leopard (also a clean install after a gummed up upgrade) for a few weeks without issues. So I think it's a choice VMWare made. If the option doesn't currently exist, perhaps it will.

Ken, good call! Now I've just got to figure out how to pin that "document" to the dock.

FYI Spaces has been pretty handy for keeping work and non-work seperate. I changed the Spaces app to only have two and apple-arrow toggles back and forth. Parallels and (now) Fusion are forced to open in the second space - and I run them full screen and using my work VPN for Outlook, file servers, etc.

Fortunately, as we deal with a lot of video at work, getting Fusion expensed shouldn't be a prob. Though I also have a small Vaio work laptop.

You can always launch a VM directly using the document in your home folders Documents/Virtual Machines/ folder. I just launch this directly through Quicksilver myself.

I miss that too, Dave. If you only have one VM created it should just launch. I suspect it's related to security with Leopard requiring its password too.
