jkOnTheRun Geek Session- Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium unboxing

By James Kendrick | Saturday, March 15, 2008 | 2:24 PM CT | 21 comments |

Kevin’s Q1 Ultra Premium finally arrived and we had a short chat while he unboxed the newest Samsung UMPC.  The Q1 is pretty sweet but you’ll have to watch to see if it is indeed a "Premium".  Kevin showed us all about the new Q1 and compared it to his older Q1P so you can see how it compares in size and function.  We had a surprise drop-in guest who is an experienced YouTube star in his own right so don’t miss him.  Have a look at our chat and get a feel for how happy new gadgets makes us, although you’ll have to admit Kevin is the happier of the two.  After all, it’s his new toy tool.  Enjoy the chat!

  • My attorney said my name is a trademark and to not sue you for infringement, you should just hand over … oh, I don’t know … iPhone, EeePC, Q1PU.

    HA!

While all of us here await his Verdict, he’s merrily having fun. Oh the torment.

Hey, will you call up Control Panel and see if it has the bloody delay I noted with that A110 CPU?

  • Kevin, a user on Origami Project (http://origamiproject.com/forums/thread/30245.aspx) reported he was getting more than 6 hours usage out of his Q1UP.

Also, the user reported a “screen protector” that seemed to have some bend to it. Does your usage mirror that?

  • Why doesnt this video play on the iPhone? All your others seem to. Now I’ve got to go and fire up the pc. So much for mobile viewing!

Thanks for the video anyway guys.

  • Congrats on your new device, Kevin! :)

But please, if you do more videos (and I hope you’ll do plenty), use your DV camera and not the webcam. It’s a real pain to watch the webcam video because of all the stuttering and low audio/video quality!

Just a note from a reader who is probably as excited as you are… ;)

  • Mike, there’s no delay when bringing up the Control Panel. This device should generally run circles around the A110-powered units. The clock speed is nearly double, the front side bus speed is 33% faster and there’s 4x more on-board cache (512 KB vs 2 MB). This is essentially a UMPC with a low-end notebook CPU. Of interesting note: the power used by this CPU is 5.5W while the A110s use 3W. The new Atom CPUs will use between .5 and 2.5W, depending on the clock speed.

B., I’m selling my old Samsung Q1P and possibly the Asus EEE to recoup some of the costs on this $1299 purchase. Without selling devices to offset this new one, I probably wouldn’t have purchased it.

David, I’m watching the video on my iPhone right now in YouTube although I didn’t see the video appear in Safari. Hit up YouTube and search for “kevinctofel” to see all of our videos. This one is up already so clearly the Oompa Loompa strike at YouTube is over. ;)

As far as the video hosting & quality: we’ve done these dual-screen geek sessions before without any problem, but for some reason, the video was very choppy this time around. Nothing we can do about that now unfortunately. Trust me, there will be PLENTY more videos (done with my DV cam) of just the device. ;) In terms of downloading the video in full quality: we always try to provide a direct download on our Mobile Media video page; usually a day or two after the vid is on YouTube. Hit the Videos link at the top of our home page to see what I mean.

  • The purpose of these geek session videos are to allow us to quickly get a quick look video and chat about a given topic. We do these through Skype and unfortunately this means we are subject to any Skype foibles like the stuttering. Doing a “real” video takes so much time and preparation that if we only did those you’d get a lot less videos from us and would have to wait days for us to do one instead of these quick knock-off videos like this one. We have also been told that a lot of people like to have both of us chatting on video too and this is the only way to do that. Just enjoy each video and take it like we meant it and you’ll get more video footage of cool gear. :)

  • JHall, we post to YouTube because they are easily available via mobile devices where Blip.tv is not as accessible. I routinely have trouble watching streaming Blip.tv videos, including those by GBM as they don’t stream as well as YouTube IMHO.

  • Kevin, i believe he was talking about the control panel under Vista not XP, as some people have reported issues.

but i have the A110 unit with Vista & have no signifigant delay when opening the control panel, takes about 1-2 seconds.

people having problems must have their units configured improperly. obviously if mine can do it than anybody elses can as well.

  • “Trust me, there will be PLENTY more videos (done with my DV cam) of just the device”

Kevin, that’s exactly what I hoped you would be saying. ;) I’m looking forward to it!

    Thanks for your efforts! :)

  • Yeah, you guys *definitely* got caught in the video conversion delay. But it was all for the good! This morning at Apple Store Soho, I could call up your vid on the iPhone!!

  • >>>but i have the A110 unit with Vista & have no signifigant delay when opening the control panel, takes about 1-2 seconds.

Now wait a minute. Let’s be clear here. That delay was when the Control Panel was showing ICONS. I saw it and other people on the Net confirmed it too.

Mike Cane8:53 AM on March 16, 2008 Reply

  • yes Mike thats what i was talking about, it takes 1-2 seconds to open the CP & draw all icons.

i acknowledged the problem you spoke of, i had it as well during the initial factory install of my Q1U. the CP used to take about 10-15 seconds to completely load. but after tweaking the problem disappeared.

before anyone brings up icon caching, thats not it at all. the CP lag would happen everytime the CP was opened.

  • I was able to get the Apple Wireless keyboard to work with my Q1UP and it works great. I’ll probably end up keeping XP tablet on mine until Vista’s bugs get worked out.
    Nice review.
