CrystalMark scores for the Samsung Q1U-P
Before I go play with the REDFLY mobile companion, I should probably get the obligatory benchmarks out of the way on Samwise. Take them for what you will; some folks swear by benchmarks while others couldn’t care less. Me? I think they provide one of many indicators as to how a device will perform when compared to devices with similar but different specifications. Meaning: I prefer the "feel" for how a device performs, but I realize that’s subjective. So I’m providing both in my coverage: objective measurements and subjective thoughts. Please note that I’m using an updated version of CrystalMark (R3 vs. R2); it shouldn’t cause any major differences in results, but I wanted to mention it.
Feel free to compare the Q1 Ultra Premium scores with ones I did on the Q1P with 2 GB of RAM. Or you can compare them to the Q1P with 1 GB of RAM or even the Samsung Q1B results. It’s up to you. I can tell you that you won’t be surprised: the Q1 Ultra Premium with just 1 GB of RAM handily trumped all prior scores. How much? Well, the best overall CrystalMark score up to now was the score of 20349 received by the Pentium-based Q1P with 2 GB of RAM. The Ultra Premium with half the RAM scored 28508… roughly 40% higher. As I said the other day: this is a notebook processor hiding in a UMPC form factor. It might make for a low-end notebook, but it’s definitely a high-end UMPC in my book.
Hey Kevin can you run the CrystalMark once you have installed Vista on the Q1UP. Just would like to see how much Vista overhead, does on the Q1UP. Thanks Keep up the great videos.
Most certainly HG. This first week is dedicated to the folks that want to use XPTE on this device. After that, it will likely be Vista as that’s how I was using my Q1P for the past year. The Tablet PC integration is better for my work style in Vista.
Hey Kevin all of your posts on the Q1U-P have been really helpful. I am a medical student who is currently in the market for a umpc and the Q1U-P so far seems to be the winner. Besides general use, which will be fairly heavy I also would run visual studio 2005 and a windows mobile emulator on it (in order to run many of my mobile based medical software). In your educated opinion, do you think the Q1U-P will be able to handle this without breaking much of a sweat? Thanks and keep up the great Info

and although its good, it would be perfect to have that extra ooomph. With an HSDPA card in it it would be an awesome low-end PC and mobile device. I’d much rather have a Q1 U P than an MB Air

I’ve read all of your posts and watched the videos – which are very helpful. I have it narrowed to Q1U-P and Fujitsu P1620. Any chance you will compare those two units? Thanks so much!!

It seems like everyone using the Q1U-P is finally seeing the high performance that UX users have had for years. I still have no idea why it seems like the majority of the UMPC community has overlooked the device.
Yup, same CPU as a UX. I can’t answer for others, but I can tell you why I passed on the UX. Screen size, initial prices and the lack of an integrated stand. I wouldn’t say I overlooked… I’d say I dismissed it because it wouldn’t meet my requirements. Still… a fair observation and the UX is an equally powerful device.
Benz145: The Sony UX fell off my shortlist primarily because of the small display and hyper-compressed 0.09mm dot pitch. It induced a headache every time I tried using it. A next-gen version with 7″ display would be far more appealing.
I actually like the fact that is one of the smaller UMPCs out there. I’ve heard that the Q1U’s keyboard isn’t very good, I couldn’t imagine the UX’s being any worse. No UMPC is going to be useful for typing out a research paper.
I have a Vaio UX myself currently running Ubuntu Gutsy. I’m fine with the power of the unit and the screen size I’ve gotten used to. What I have a problem with is the poor, poor, poooooooooor battery life and flakey wifi performance. I am looking at upgrade options and have narrowed down to the P1620 and Q1U-P as well. If you guys could do a direct comparison video between the two, that would be terrific.

world and not worry about damaging it. With 3 layers of protection, your UMPC just got tougher.
