I find it difficult to understand the pricing of the higher end models. The $749 model has 1 gig more ram, 0.4 gig higher processor speed, higher speed HDD, vista business instead of basic on the $849 model . I cant understand the increase of $100 in price :s Am i missing something? Because as they stand, i would much rather buy the $749 version…

I just spoke to HP via live chat. The rep said the downgrade to XP with a Vista license will be available on May 15.

HP’s cart does not work for the $549 Linux version. I checked by adding a $19 mouse as well. When I go to checkout, the mouse is there but the laptop has disappeared from the cart. I guess I will wait for it to come back on Amazon (which has a web page, but “Currently unavailable”).

What happened to custom building one?

I’d like the $549 model but I’d also like Bluetooth – alternatively I’d like the $749 model but with Linux instead of Windows.

If you have noticed with all HP pricing, SmartBuys are the most affordable preconfigured option as they are the ones readily stocked by the distributor and are produced in greater quantities. The non-SmartBuys are not expected to be purchased or stocked.

tgfd: You are not the only one confused by the $849 model. Two weeks ago Engadget reported the leaked configurations and stated, “There’s also a mysterious $849 Vista Basic model listed as having ‘regional’ availability (the others are listed as ‘Smart Buy’) with Bluetooth and bigger battery, but we don’t see why it’s more expensive than the Vista Business version.”

that $850 model makes absolutely no sense.

Hey James, if you hold something bad and told us only good part of HP Mini, then you are the one to blamed. Or there is no necessary to think about it.

Don’t worry, I read everyone’s review today, weighed all the pros and cons, and figure my extra copy of XP might get used. But for my needs, I think it’ll be just right. It’s just for traveling and making other people jealous.

And if not, there’s always Ebay!

I think you have to order an XP system via a phone rep; the HP video mentioned that you could to “ask” for XP even though it’s not listed as an order option.
