Eh. Maybe the 900 vs 901 debate really is 6 of 1, half dozen of the other. So it pulls 50% throttling while on battery. Wouldn’t the Celeron’s battery life be boosted too by doing that? I have to admit seeing those falling cubes on the 901 vs the 900 impressed me.

For $600 and 5 hours battery life I might just be IN, despite no touchscreen!

anyone satisfied with the 900 Celeron would be with the 900 Atom as well. the 900 Atom is still slightly faster and does consume somewhat less power even at full throttle.

I’m sold. I’m buying one. $600 bucks is a bargain for a tiny device like this. I’m done with full sized heavy annoying laptops for good. I hate carrying that crap in the airport.

Tom’s Hardware just did an extensive benchmark comparison of the Atom and found the power savings to be much smaller than reported. Note that on battery power the EEE PC 901 throttles the Atom back to half the CPU power for battery savings (800 MHz) which is gonna affect things and that Asus quoted battery life is no doubt with the CPU throttled.

i’m not sure what some peoples problem is with the 900 Atom. it is benchmarking slightly higher than the 900 Celeron at a fraction of the power, plus it has a much better gfx subsystem. it is also reporting significantly higher battery life at 5-6 hours compared to the 900 Celeron 3 hours. some of that is because slightly higher cap battery but also because of the Atom itself.

I’d really like to see some benchmarks impressions of how slow or snappy things are when the Atom is running strictly off battery as that’s the most important part. Is that 50% rollback of the CPU going to make web browsing unbearable? And what about video playback at both 50% and 100%? Which would handle a DiVXed AVI or even Quicktime video file better?

Very nice, Sascha. I will be interested to hear your continuing thoughts on the performance of the Atom since it is not benchmarking very well compared to other Intel chips.
