Go away you zilly leetle MIDs running Vizta, or I will taunt you a zecond time!
Don’t count on seeing any MIDs thinking they can run a desktop operating system like Vista on an AMD processor. In fact, the less-than-stellar experience of running large screen apps on the small screen isn’t even the right approach. We early adopters of Origami devices remember (and still deal with) dialog boxes that are larger than our screen can display. AMD seems to really "get" the MID concept based on this commentary on Intel’s Atom in the MID from Bob Morris, director of platform enablement for ARM’s mobile processor group.
The value of Atom enabling MIDs to run traditional PC software due toits x86 architecture is questionable, according to Morris. Thissoftware was designed for traditional PCs and will deliver lowerperformance and a degraded experience when running on a MID’s 3- to6-inch screen. MID software will need to be speciallywritten/re-written and tailored for the MID market anyway, Morris noted. – Digitimes
MID software geared towards a positive experience that fits the device, both figuratively and literally? Can I get a high-five for Mr. Morris, please! All joking aside, MIDs will need a lean environment to run well given the battery and processing limitations they can’t ignore given the hardware of today. I’m not speaking of Netbooks and other small noteboooks here, I’m specifically refering to pocketable or nearly pocketable MIDs. We can’t cram it all in such a small package at under $500 just yet. Thoughts on Mr. Morris’ commentary?

..that’s where GNU/Linux comes in…which OS can be tailored better? gimme gimme some…ubuntu mobile or whatever and these small devices will be great. how difficult is it to understand i ask myself. even apple used OSX for the iphone, but it’s not the full desktop/notebook OS…we don’t need mr. morris’ comment to understand, don’t we
Can you just give me the powers of an iPod Touch in a MID (5-6″ screen, w/keyboard) package?
MIDs will sell in fewer numbers than UMPCs. The combined sales of new smartphones such as the iPhone 3G and the Blackberry Bold and new ULCPCs such as the eee PC 900 and Dell’s new entry will completely overshadow MIDs.
>>>Thoughts on Mr. Morris’ commentary?
Yawn. I think Apple figured that out. Which is why the iPhone and even iPods look nothing like the desktop UI.
AMD=ARM?
Confused of Bonn.
@Hoot: Given that MID category includes things like the iPhone…it is untrue that UMPCs will outsell MIDs.
I find UMPC form factor odd as often crippled keyboard is included and this is not the route to take. I would prefer a HTC Advantage style detachable keyboard perhaps…full size.
