I second on DSlibris being better than ReadMore. Also there is DSReader which can't be held vertically like a book, but has a really nice interface and it is actually easier to read the horizontal way imho, but not as much fun :)

I'm a fan of the Colors program for pressure sensitive painting that works pretty decently.
check out this amazing Rembrandt copy http://jasrdunn.blogspot.com/2008/05/rembrandt-on-nintendo-ds.html

Then there's the novelty of the virtual ipod with functioning touch scroll wheel which is fun... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyiV6SYv3FE

DSOrganize with a great free web browser, notes, calendar, schedule, file browser and so much more.

Those are my picks for DS apps, not to mention the games. But who wants to play games on a gaming handheld anyway?

~$30 DS broken hinge as is on ebay incl shipping
~$21 replacement case and triwing screwdriver (and multiple hours of tiny tiny work to thread a lcd cable through a hinge and not lose all the l and r springs...but perfect working ds in the end) from dealextreme free shipping
~$35 DSTT card reader with 2gb kingston micro sd card from dealextreme free shipping

TOTAL: ~$90 for homebrew capable ds if you're a cheap ass like myself :)

There's also DS Libris - which does a bit of a better job for ebooks if you ask me... And it's free.

The DS ~$150 or so. Tack on another $50 for a kit that will let you run homebrew and files from a mini/micro SD card and there you have it.

5-15 hours of battery life, cool form factor - and has a few other neat tricks past that of regular ebook readers. That being said, there's something considerably more awesome about eink than there is the screens of the DS.

There's also a few rumors floating around that the DS will undergo a refresh/redesign at E3 - while this seems at odds with good sales figures, it was reported by Famico in japan, who are generally pretty tight with Nintendo and relatively reputable.
