Nokia Chat debuts with GPS integration for presence

NokiachatWhile we’re not all plugged into The Matrix just yet (or maybe we are and just don’t know it?), we’re starting to see a trend towards something I mentioned earlier today: Location Based Services. Nokia Labs continues the trend today with the debut of Nokia Chat. Yes, it’s an IM client. Yes, it works with any XMPP/Jabber-based messaging systems. And Yes, it takes advantage of the GPS radio in your Nokia device.

With a compatible device, you can have your location show up on a map using Nokia Chat. Or if you want, it can update your phyiscal presence by announcing when you arrive a pre-determined location so you pals know that you’re right around the corner. Folks in the labs have already successfully tested the free app with these handsets: Nokia N95 8GB, N95, N82, N81 8GB, N81, N76, E71, E66, E51, 6290, 6120 Classic, and 6110 Navigator. They expect it should also work with the Nokia E90 Communicator, 6124 classic, 6121 Classic and the 5700 XpressMusic. It’s a freebie, so why not put yourself (and your location) out there?
