Dell Latitude XT multi-touch upgrade coming tomorrow
When Dell first announced the Latitude XT Tablet PC the big news was the capacitive digitizer and multi-touch capability. Unfortunately when the XT started shipping it became clear that the software wasn’t ready to enable multi-touch and that it would be coming "real soon". Real soon means tomorrow according to GottaBeMobile who is reporting that effective July 15 the software upgrade enabling multi-touch will be available from Dell for download. The multi-touch functions sound much like those on the iPhone and iPod Touch with two-finger zooming, double-finger scrolling and a programmable double-tap being stretched to the larger screen. Take a look at Dell’s video demo of the multi-touch in action:

I think this is great news and I’m looking forward to the details of the implementation. Specifically, I’m curious if you can configure the amount of zoom when using two fingers to expand/contract the view. What I wouldn’t want to do is have to zoom, zoom, zoom with a repeated gesture to get to the desired amount of zoom. This is the challenge to such a feature on a large-screen device. Regardless of that question in my mind, I’m glad to see Dell XT owner having something to look forward to tomorrow!
I expect ‘both’ of them will be excited.
If they cut off say $1000 maybe hundreds of people would be excited.
LAME!LAME!LAME!
And that’s a DEMO where you are suppose to be impressed! Forget it DELL! Try something DULL! Is what you are good at…
Well i do think it is kinda cool you can do it but really i dont know what to use it for, and it sure does not justify the price of the XT
The multi-touch software update is now available. More details and a video walkthrough of how to install are here: http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/07/15/latitude-xt-software-update-is-here.aspx
I think there should be an open standard for multi-touch devices for the 3 major OSs. That would stop companies like dell from rolling out weak software for them. It looks like windows 7 will address this, but I could be wrong.
