nVidia GPU problems force Dell BIOS update

Nvidia_logoThe fallout of the upcoming nVidia GPU situation is just starting as Dell has issued BIOS updates for the notebooks they sell with the possibly defective chips.  Earlier nVidia filed a report with the SEC that stated the graphics chipmaker was taking a $150 – 200 million charge to cover the costs associated with "warranty, repair, return, replacement"  and other results of "our previous generation MCP and GPU products used in notebook systems."  Ouch, this sounds like a bunch of notebook models made by several OEMs and sure enough Dell has issued the BIOS update for ten different laptops.  This is going to get big and ugly pretty fast, I’ll bet.

  • It’s also probably the reason my new D630 for work still hasn’t arrived! I hope the BIOS update doesn’t simply turn down the GPU clock and up the fan speed.

  • Hey James I also heard about this about a month ago that it also might affect some of the Macbook Pro.

  • My Vaio has all sort of problems with the nVidia chip. Fortunately it has a second mode you can switch to that uses an Intel Graphics chip. That works fine.
