jkOnTheRun Geek Session- Verizon LG Decoy and LG Dare

It’s time for another Geek Session where Kevin and I sit down and talk tech for a while.  Today’s session is our first effort using a new video conferencing solution, ooVoo.  We heard about ooVoo from our friend Joanna Stern at Laptop Magazine and it is definitely a cool platform for doing these Geek Sessions.  Thanks to ooVoo for working with us to get this going.  In this video we get to have a first look at two phones that came to Mobile Tech Manor today, the LG Decoy and LG Dare from Verizon.  The Decoy is the first phone that has an integrated Bluetooth headset that pops into the phone for storage and charging.  It is the thinnest and lightest headset I have ever seen and you’ll have to see it for yourself to believe it.  The LG Dare on the other hand is a touchscreen phone without a keyboard or keypad of any kind, like that fruit phone, and it is evident that LG has put a lot of attention into the user interface.  Have a look at both phones and enjoy the show.

  • The vid looks good with a little pixelation. Sound is good slao. Can it be made to fill more of the box?

  • There were so many ‘thats what she saids’ I couldn’t help but laugh a bit.

  • sound seems to be out of sync, and JK’s mic picks up so much of his breathing that i worry that my speakers are going to blow up on me at times…

  • Does the Dare do Exchange email?

  • completely out of sync and my ears hurt, like you scratching mt ear drums with finger nails, can’t take it anymore at 3:21.

  • It’s clear that my mic level was recorded too high by ooVoo, it didn’t sound too high during the recording itself. On top of that YouTube has recently changed their audio compression and that is giving people fits too. Our next recording will be much better as I’ll make sure the mic levels are low enough.

I don’t know if the Dare does Exchange yet, I literally just got it.

  • Skype seems a bit better and the sound syncs with the video, ooVoo needs a little more time in the oven.

  • personally, i like the old method better. whoever is showcasing the devices (usually James) should have the larger box, while whoever is just commenting (usually Kev) has the small box.

plus with the larger box we can actually SEE the device better.

  • Features of both mobile phones DARE and DECOY are good but I am a loyal customer of Nokia. LG do something more innovative to attract customers.

  • They advertise it as the “first” with an attached Bluetooth headset, but I feel like I’ve seen other models before…

  • Of course, I am a bit biased but I like the new video format. Lower the mic volumes and I think you guys will be good. JK looked very clear and if JK sends high quality video his window will be bigger.

  • I didn’t do the math at all, but it looks like 50% of the video is a black border. Just seems wasteful to me. I do like that small Bluetooth headset though. If you’re on a call and in the middle you decide you need to be hands free, does the headset connect automatically?

  • How does the Dare compare to a WinMo phone or to the iPhone?

  • Video was okay and as Cody said, it does seem like a waste of space. Audio could use a bit of work but otherwise I found it fine.

  • I like this look – looks a lot better and a lot more professional. But what is it with those big headphones?!?!?! LOL!
