Plica concept: are two touchscreens better than one?

Plica

Here’s an interesting concept that’s really a play on something we’ve seen before. What if you took a small touchscreen about the size of the iPhone and added another with a folding hinge between the two? That’s the design idea behind the Plica concept. Need some basic information? Just look it up on one screen. Want to expand your viewable area? Unfold and tap, tap, tap.

The idea is interesting and would offer more display real estate when using an on-screen keyboard. Of course, mobile tech is all about compromises, so any manufacturer going this route would contend with device thickness issues. Tough call, but still interesting.

  • Also contend with battery weight! 2 screens needs more power.

And how practical is that, really? It can’t be used as a phone, because the hinges are at the edge, so no twist to get one screen outwards.

  • OLPC v2.0 will look like this – basically like a modified nintendo ds lite with some additional functionality. I personally like the feel of a keyboard.
