CloudBook updated with XP, more memory, higher price

Everex_cloudbook_ce1201vDid you hold off on the original CloudBook because you wanted XP but didn’t have a license to spare? Everex now offers the CE1201V that includes Windows XP at a price of $449. The price boost over the original is all in the operating system license: Everex bumped the RAM up to a respectable 1 GB and boosted the storage capacity to 60 GB. In case you forgot the rest of the specs, here’s a refresher:

  • 1.2 GHz VIA C7-M CPU
  • 800 x 480, 7-inch display
  • 802.11 b/g, Ethernet
  • 4 USB ports
  • 4-in-1 card reader
  • VGA webcam

With a plethora of netbooks with the almost-standard 1024 x 600 display, it’s a shame that Everex didn’t upgrade what might be among the most limiting factors: the screen resolution.

Not just the screen, the touchpad is stamp-sized and at the top right corner, with the mouse buttons being at the top left corner. I guess OK for using it standing up, but …

How quickly we’ve gone to disdaining that screen res!

  • Uh oh, it’s still got that pesky Via C7 processor. Asbestos pants on.

My Cloudbook CE1200 runs well under Windows XP. It runs older 3D games well and the superb WINDOWS graphics drivers allow for psuedo higher resolutions from the screen. It’s a shame that Linux driver support for it is so far behind (see “none”). I still dual boot, but gaming and a few other tasks are better accomplished under Windows on this particular machine.

Oh, and the C7 may be a slower chip, but anything fast enough to handle WoW, CS 1.6 and Quake 3 is fine by me.
