Like many Olympic medals, the Lenovo U8 MID is staying in China

LenovomidAs the Olympics started last week, my mind wandered and wondered where the Olympic-branded Lenovo IdeaPad U8 was. This Mobile Internet Device was eye-spied a few times at CES, so the assumption was that we’d get a hold of it at some point this year. And so we waited… and waited… and waited… but no news appeared.

I pinged a contact at Lenovo late yesterday and got some news, but it’s not exactly the news I was hoping to hear. Turns out the Lenovo U8 was always intended as a China-only release and according to Lenovo, there are currently no plans to release it in the United States. It’s always possible that importers specializing in gadgets might get their mitts on a few, but that remains to be seen. And so does the Lenovo IdeaPad U8 in these here parts. To be fair, I don’t recall ever seeing any release information for the U8, so maybe it was just my own expectations that we’d see the device. In any case, if we get any additional information to the contrary, we’ll update the post… and do the happy dance.
