In Australia, the best price for an Aspire 1 with 120gb HD, 1gb RAM and 1.6 processor is $499 after cash back. The only way to buy them is with a cashback deal- you pay 598 and return the side of the box and receipt to Acer and they refund you $99 in 28 days (!?).

What can I say, the blue screen of death is back. We bought 2 and both had problems until we changed the boot mode. Downloading some software will bring on the BSD.

The unit is zippy and light, gets a bit warm on the bottom left side, but this dissipates quickly.

With Wifi, battery life is just over 2hrs. Not bad for a sub notebook. Wifi connectivity and effectiveness improves drastically on AC power. The difference is noticeable.Association with wifi sites is fast and effective.

Other drawbacks are the lack of Bluetooth, IR, or a plug for a dial up connection.

Other posts have mentioned a whine from the fan, but we’ve had ours just short of a month and noticed nothing.

Love the built in webcam and microphone. The SD extended storage is good. I’m running a 4GB SDHC with no problems. Nice how its been incorporated into the main system rather than as a usb afterthought. Moving to a 16Gb SDHC card after Christmas.

In summary, a mixed bag. The cheapest on the market, fast, clean design, good screen and sound, but lacking a few mobile essentials. Then there’s the BSD again (probably not for the linux version which is sold here with only 12gb HDD).

You might not be checking old articles, but i’m considering buying an acer aspire one and i’m torn between getting the linux or the XP versions.

I can get them for the same price so that isn’t an issue, but i’m wondering which would be better suited for note taking and web browsing.

Windows is the right way to kill a computer. Give it a few months and it’ll be trash.

Linux is the future, and the *ONLY* reason you are seeing these small and cheap computers in the market now.
Want windows? BUY a VISTA and M$ will thank you. BTW buy a BIG computer too.

I haven’t seen it written anywhere and I’m afraid Acer US doesn’t either: are those 2 SD card slots compatible with SD/HC crrds, as in High Capacity (above 2 or 4GB)?

This standard has been out for 3 years now and I still have a hard time finding clear info about it for specific support on new devices. As if most journalists, reviewers, etc. never heard of it (or didn’t care)!!

I picked up an XP version at MicroCenter at lunch.
Did you notice the touch pad can be “pinched” and opposite to change the display size in Firefox

Mixer, there’s some fan whine for sure. Not something that’s bother me, but some folks might not care for it. It’s more of a whine than fan noise, like the one I hear from my MBP, for example.

Bill, there’s some heat: mostly felt in the bottom center, i.e.: where the “bump” is that showed in our video. Certainly not unbearably hot by any means.

John: I watched a Hulu video outside yesterday, although not in full sunlight. It was washed out, but viewable. The glossy screen doesn’t help when outside and I wouldn’t plan to use this outdoors for any length of time.

Hey guys, quit fiddling with XP! I specifically bought my AA1 with only 512 MB and no hard drive for not being tempted by MS any more.
I’m a novice with Linux, but already like Acer’s implementation a lot:
Almost any video stream is supported out of the box thanks to MediaWrap and the system is very responsive. The looks are not as nice as XP’s, but still all right.

otherwise the Acer isnt quite the deal everyone thinks it is, that would bring it up to $520 & make it similar to other netbooks which come standard with hi-cap batteries.

Amazon has the white SSD models. CDW is pre-ordering the six cell batteries.
