"Apple released a major update for Office 2008 for the Mac and I applied it right away".
I think you wanted to say Microsoft, Apple makes iWork.

Microsoft for the lose.

I'm sure it's not really Microsoft's fault, but I can't help but think of your story as: Exchange suddenly loses email, OneCare suddenly corrupts a database (which is bad because databases are a well-known solved problem) and dies, Exchange suddenly loses your contacts.

Often, it feels like Microsoft's solutions will work for a while, and then they suddenly malfunction. It's like they have a problem making reliable software.

James,

I had the exact same thing happen to me with my contacts and am beginning to wonder if the iPhone instigated it. As you know I have several mobile phones and sync with a hosted Exchange service. So after I saw that the contacts were gone on the iPhone and server I grabbed another device to sync the contacts up and bam they were erased off the device again. I tried a couple more devices with the same result and finally synced a device to my U810 and then up to the server successfully. Like you I had also recently culled down my contacts from over 1000 to 200. At least it worked out for both of us in the end, but it was a bit scary at first.

sync seems to be hit and miss.

i ended up having a calendar wiped because i reflashed one device and the cleared database was seen as a deletion or something that the other end...

no big loss tho as all the events where in the past, but still.

there must be some better way at doing all this, but right now i cant think of any...
