I don't mean to nitpick here, but does RIM's 8.9% look larger than Windows Mobile's 11.5% in the pie chart to anyone else?

Considering that symbian has such a large market share why are there so few applications compared to windows mobile/iphone!

The biggest impediment to more Symbian marketshare in the US are twofold...

First, Nokia doesn't make phones for two of the 4 big carriers. And all the smaller carriers are CDMA.

Second, Nokia doesn't have the brand recognition that it does in Europe and the rest of the GSM world. Nokia has been a market leader forever, and it's the default go-to brand for anyone who doesn't know much about cellphones. Add to this the fact that Nokia doesn't differentiate between Smartphones and high-end feature phones, so when you buy an N95 because of its camera, you're actually buying a smart phone. Compared to this, Windows Mobile and Blackberry are marketed to the "do business" crowd.

Also, AT&T is the only carrier which carries one or two low end S60 phones.

My bad Adam; thanks for the catch. I still expect Palm to grow... even with the Treo Pro adding up numbers for the Windows Mobile side.

Shawn, I think the U.S. issue is two-fold: lack of marketing and lack of subsidies on high-end / smartphones. They make great devices, but people don't know about them. And when they do find out about them, they get surprised by prices in the $500 to $800 range.
