Averatec’s netbook wants to be your Buddy
There’s a new netbook coming to town, but it’s got the same face as many others. What’s the difference then? Averatec’s device wants to be your Buddy. Maybe in name only, but you have to admit that it’s a good name for a companion device. Pricing for the Averatec Buddy in the U.S. is $449 and gets you the standard netbook specifications: 10.2-inch display, 160 GB hard drive, 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU, Windows XP Home and a gigabyte of RAM. There’s no mention of a Linux model, but of course you can mod your Buddy as you see fit. If he or she really is your Buddy, I’m sure they’ll understand.
whats funny is in a way Averatec started the “low cost” ultraportable market, relatively speaking. back long before the EEE 700, Averatec released their “1000 series” which consisted of 10.6″ laptops that competed directly with Fujitsu & Sony. but while Fujitsu prices started at $1600 & Sony prices started at $2k, Averatec’s prices started at $899. which was an AWESOME deal at the time. Plus you have to consider they used standard ultraportable parts at the time, Pentium-M & 1280 x 768, there was no Atom & 1024 x 600.
