Turn your S60 screen into a smartphone screen
I like the S60 operating system for phones but have a hard time getting the screens organized the way I like. I am used to having things like the Today Screen in Windows Mobile and being able to customize it to display the information I find useful. A utility from epocware, Handy Shell, may be the answer to my S60 problem as it creates a Today Screen that is customizable to display a wealth of information on the S60 phone. The today view lets you put application shortcuts to easily get to the programs you use most often along with PIM information to make a more smartphone-like home screen. Take a look at the following screens and you’ll see what I mean:

This is the sort of thing I’ve been looking for. Unfortunately, I can’t find it for the E90.
Related to the subsequent post on Android, does this app turn S60 feature phones into smartphones? Or smart-like-phones?
Oh darn. It looks like they’ve blocked downloads of this. I popped it onto my Nokia E71, tried to run the SYS file, and it simply connects to the site and tries to log me in.
Just thought you might wanna know.

Handy Shell has been released and is not under beta testing any more. I like it quite a lot but I think it still needs some improvement on the internal screen of Nokia E90. At the moment it shows about the same information as on the outer screen…

You need to download the trial of the full release in order to get to enjoy this piece of wizardry.
The full price is a tiny bit daunting though… it weighs in at US$45.
However… I’ve found the 14 day trial to be indispensable. It’s an awesome piece of software. And I truly don’t know why Nokia isn’t taking notes from these guys about the value of a killer user interface.
