Skyfire_logoGood news for those who have been wanting to try the Skyfire browser on your phone but couldn’t get in the private beta.  Skyfire is opening up the beta to anyone with the release of version 0.8.  Skyfire is currently only available for Windows Mobile but when I interviewed Nitin Bhandari, the CEO of Skyfire at the Mobilize conference (which will hopefully be available soon) he assured me that the S60 version of 0.8 is not far behind.  He also indicated that Skyfire is working on porting the browser to other platforms, I believe the Android word was even mentioned as a possibility.

Skyfire is server-based as web pages are rendered on the Skyfire servers to take the load off the slow processors of the PDA/ phone.  This means that the browser is one of the fastest ones you can use on a Windows Mobile phone and every time I have played with it I’ve come away impressed.  This new version adds several new features including a smart address bar that will let you search the web and the ability to share web page links via SMS.  Bhandari could not give me an idea when Skyfire might be leaving beta and go gold so you’d better go get the beta.

  • An Android version would be cool. Apple, of course, would decline it because it duplicates existing functionality. And because Stevie H Tap-Dancing Jobs couldn’t claim it was his idea and patent it.

  • Took a look, and was very disappointed to learn it doesn’t support VGA displays, so trying it on my Advantage is out. It seems to me that VGA and larger screen devices like the Advantage are the ones that could most benefit from a better and speedier browsing experience.

  • Yolanda, I heard that VGA was supported quite a while back and I’ve tested the earlier versions on my Advantage.

  • I love Skyfire as thru my Treo 700w (win mobile) ..I have been able to enjoy
youtube, hulu and other flash sites too.

Wanted 2 try futuristic alarm clock site out to sleep.fm, but the time is off… guess that is becausee it runs on skyfire server. Also, some flash audio sites downgrade audio quality like blip.fm

either way its a start to having the internet in the palm of my hands.. flash is a huge part of such!

  • Nope, no go James. While it installed, the advanced settings menu is inaccessible, as the tick boxes are off the screen. Also, after a brief time, the entire app window goes to one half of the display (verticaly). Checking the forums and FAQs I found that indeeed it does not support VGA. Too bad for me.

  • Is anyone else having NO SOUND issues? I installed the browser on my Moto Q – works great, plays video – but no sound! I’ve re-installed, volume is up, not muted etc., – no sound though. Anyone else?

  • NO SOUND SOLVED – install skyfire cab to main memory, NOT storage card. Sound works perfect now.

  • I have the Updated WM 6.1, installed skyfire to main memory, not sd card, still no sound.

  • Just downloaded and installed to main memory – no sound on youtube. It is also difficult to change the sound on youtube’s flash app since clicking anywhere on skyfire drags the screen around. ideas?
