Digital Nomads: processing your hotel room for working
Most of us who travel for business end up developing a routine we employ when we get to the hotel. This practice is to get the environment ready for working sessions and getting down to business. Digital Nomads has a nice article where the author lists what he does in every hotel room to process it for business. There are some nice things to do, many I have done myself:
Disaster prevention
I have a fear of being late, so I immediately make sure all the timezones on my clocks are correct. I set the hotel clock alarm and alsohave a wake up call. About 10% of the time one of these will fail. Ialso set my phone which acts as an alarm clock.If I’m giving a presentation, I put a USB drive with the files inthe safe in the room. This has actually saved me twice when there werecomputer issues and once when there was a flood.

One thing on my personal list is to always bring a travel power strip. Hotel rooms never have enough outlets and they are always poorly placed so I bring my own to keep all my stuff plugged in and working away.

I have my Tosh M700 and the hotel I’m in has very fast wired ethernet for free! I also have my Nokia N95 8Gb (as it is unlocked and I can swap Sims, unlike my iPhone), I have my HTC Advantage and using pocket onenote to take audionotes, pictures and text notes as part of an Industrial Site Survey I am doing, the autofocus camera in the HTC is ideal for this.
I made sure to pack travel adapters for my kit and took a very long, thin ethernet cable.

The Client is helpful, the locals are very friendly, the food and drink is excellent, the weather is warm and sunny and there’s fast broadbrand for free. Makes for a great business trip!
I have to say that is the cleanest gadget desktop I’ve ever seen.
I hope to someday be able to organize my gadgets like that.
Simple ideas for the road warriors. I like using wake up call, but you can’t always rely on the hotel staff. Using the room safe has got to be a first priority. A proper lock for your laptop should be another, or leaving it at the hotel desk for safe keeping along with other valuables, if you are are day tripping, sight seeing, etc.
