Freeware of the Moment- Notepad 2008

I use simple text editors a lot and am always on the lookout for good ones.  Today’s Freeware of the Moment is just such an editor for the Windows platform.  Notepad 2008 is a solid free text editor that has a ribbon toolbar to make interaction with the program easier.  I know that you either love ribbon toolbars or hate them but I find them easier to work with on small screened netbooks.  The big buttons on the ribbon toolbar are easier for me to see and tap with the touchpad.  If you’re looking for a text editor give it a try.

    Two questions:

    1) Isn’t “Notepad” a Microsoft brand? There has been a “Notepad” accessory in every version of Windows since the dawn of creation. Is this the same Notepad?

    2) What I (and a lot of other people) use Notepad for is to strip formatting from text — just paste it in, copy it out — before using the text for various purposes. I need to do that so often that I keep a shortcut to Notepad in my Quick Launch row. I don’t need a menu, much less a ribbon, but I don’t mind, either, and I like to have the latest version of everything. But: does this fancy new Notepad do ascii by default?

    I find Notepad++ to be the best text editor. It doesn’t do fancy fonts, but it is very powerful with folding and tabs, and free.

    If you need rich text. Try out the free Softmaker Office 2006. It’s also free

    My all time favorite text editor is Interspector (which I bought a few years back), but the company seems to have disappeared. Also, Notepad++ as some better implemented functions.

    Notepad++ is my choice. It has line numbering, tabbed interface, and most importantly code syntax formatting for various different languages.

    I generally use a full service editor as a notepad replacement, the free PSPad being my favorite of the moment.

    For quick & simple text hacking, ClipMate from Thornsoft works perfect. It’s the first thing I install on a new machine.

    It’s a tossup for me between Notepad++ and Notepad2. The latter is very quick to load while providing some pretty nice text editing features.

  • wow! i have been using notepad++ for years but i never heard about this new notepad 2008.

    Good posts.

    How does this compare with Notepad++ ?

    Another +1 for notepad++ !

    Seriously, between it and darkroom (or writeroom if you’re on an OSX computer) all my basic text needs are handled.

    This looks quite neat though and i’ll give it a run for sure.

    I have to agree with everyone else Notepad++ is by far the best text editor out there…

    When a new notepad comes out I give it a test run. I saw Notepad 2008 so I installed it and had a play around with it. Looks good except for the useless RC1 tab. Lots of people use MSInfo to do there nfo’s with, in basic notepad right click and open with notepad to see the info. With this 2008 modded notepad it does not recognize or open the text in MSInfo nfo’s. This also applys to Wordpad 2009 modified by the same person. Final words looks good but doesn’t function the way I need a notepad to operate. 7 for looks 5 for functionality.
